Spoilers for episode eight. The finale of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox builds toward an intimate confrontation between Amanda Knox and prosecutor Giuliano Mignini. Knox and showrunner K.J. Steinberg have described the encounter as a deliberate effort to approach Mignini with empathy while honoring Meredith Kercher—not as a documentary transcript of a private conversation.

What happens in the final episode?

The eight-episode Hulu limited series ends with “Libertá.” Hulu’s synopsis describes Amanda as living as a free woman while still haunted by what happened in Perugia. The episode’s central creative choice is an extended encounter between Amanda, played by Grace Van Patten, and Mignini, played by Francesco Acquaroli.

The series was released weekly after its first two episodes arrived on August 20, 2025; ABC’s announced schedule placed the finale on October 1, 2025. Hulu’s series announcement, Hulu’s episode listing and ABC’s release schedule provide the premise, episode information and original dates.

Why does Knox confront Mignini?

In an October 2, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Steinberg said she conceived the finale around a sustained, almost one-act-play-like exchange between the two characters. Knox was not initially slated to write the finale, but Steinberg’s approach led her to take part in shaping the episode’s televised telling of that interaction.

Knox and Steinberg described their aim as engaging Mignini with empathy while keeping Kercher’s memory in view. That is their account of the creative intention, not a guarantee that every viewer will read the scene the same way. TheWrap’s interview is the source for their discussion of the episode’s conception and purpose: TheWrap’s conversation with Knox and Steinberg.

Did Amanda Knox write the finale?

Knox participated in writing the episode, according to TheWrap’s account, but the available reporting does not establish that she wrote it alone or that the scene reproduces a verbatim exchange. The distinction matters: this is a scripted dramatization shaped by its creative team, not documentary testimony or a substitute for court records.

How the series frames its story

Hulu presents the series as the story of an American student who arrives in Italy for study abroad, is imprisoned for murder weeks later, and fights to prove her innocence and reclaim her freedom. The show’s framing emphasizes how bias and judgment shaped the case and its public perception. In a statement reproduced on Knox’s official series page, Steinberg says: “Our show is not a whodunit. It’s about how and why did this happen. How and why did bias take hold of the authorities on the ground, the people in the media, folks at home? Even the best of people, the smartest of people, had such distorted views.” This is Steinberg’s description of the show’s aims, not a neutral finding about every person involved. See Knox’s official page about the series.

Series and memoir: different kinds of accounts

The series is a scripted ensemble drama that selects and shapes scenes for television. Knox’s memoir Free is a first-person account that, according to her official site, covers incarceration, mistakes and misadventures during reintegration, and her return to Italy. The two have different purposes and scopes; neither should be treated as a replacement for court records or independent reporting. Knox’s official site provides information about the book: Amanda Knox’s books.
