Banu Mushtaq says the pressures and feelings of legal practice, alongside social struggles, feed her writing. In a May 2025 interview with Scroll, she describes advocacy, activism and literature not as competing careers but as connected expressions of a rebellious outlook. She also clarifies that while she has written about courtrooms and judicial processes, the stories selected for Heart Lamp focus mainly on family life.

How legal practice becomes material for writing

“Social struggles and the inner emotions of legal practice serve as the raw, real-life material for my writing,” Mushtaq told Sayari Debnath in Scroll’s “Meet the Writer” interview, published May 10, 2025. Her formulation points beyond legal cases as plots: it is also the emotional experience of legal work, set against wider social struggles, that supplies her fiction with lived material.

Mushtaq presents legal advocacy, social movements and creative writing as complementary parts of her rebellious orientation. The interview situates her in Karnataka’s Bandaya Sahitya protest-literary circles and describes her as one of the few women in those circles. She sums up the movement’s spirit with the words, “Bandaya is a mindset.” These are contextual details reported in the interview, rather than an independently established biography.

Why Heart Lamp centers family life

The interview asks why the domestic world in her fiction seems untouched by courts, laws and lawyers. Mushtaq’s answer distinguishes the selection in Heart Lamp from her wider body of work: she says she has written stories about courtrooms and judicial processes, but the stories chosen for this collection primarily explore family dynamics.

That distinction matters. A reader encountering Heart Lamp should not take its focus on family relationships as a complete map of Mushtaq’s subjects. Her account links intimate domestic experience and broader social conflict without claiming that every story must bring the courtroom directly into the home.

Colloquial language and the short story

Mushtaq says she writes in colloquial language to reach ordinary readers: “I write in the language of the people, in colloquial speech.” She describes the work as a dialogue with the masses, a choice of register that connects her literary practice to her social commitments.

The short story is her preferred form. “Yet, among all literary forms, the short story remains my most cherished medium,” she said in the interview. Scroll reports that she has published six short-story collections and has over 65 stories in print; those figures are the interview’s account.

Heart Lamp in English

Heart Lamp: Selected Stories is translated from Kannada into English by Deepa Bhasthi. The May 2025 interview describes it as Mushtaq’s debut appearance in English and says the stories were originally published in Kannada between 1990 and 2023. Those details, including the publication history, are as reported by Scroll.

For readers coming to the collection through its English translation, the interview offers a useful frame: the family-centered selection is one part of a larger practice shaped by legal work, activism and social struggle. Mushtaq’s own account keeps that distinction clear rather than treating the translated volume as representative of every subject she has written about. Read the full interview at Scroll.
