The available accounts describe an intense audition, collaborative rehearsals and mutual professional praise—not an established off-screen romance or feud. “Complicated relationship” is therefore a question to examine, not a conclusion the evidence supports.
What the audition story actually says
In a 1997 interview with i-D, DiCaprio recalled Danes taking an unusually direct approach during auditions. “As soon as I met with Claire and did auditions, everyone else was doing it the traditional way and she like grabbed the back of my neck and kissed me.” He said he was taken aback at first, then understood what she was doing.
The anecdote concerns an acting choice in an audition for the film. It is not evidence that the two were romantically involved or that they disliked one another. A 2016 Entertainment Tonight retrospective also recounts the moment, but the context remains professional: Danes was making a strong choice for Juliet.
How they worked together on Romeo + Juliet
Danes was chosen after reading with DiCaprio
The Los Angeles Times reported in July 1996 that Danes was selected after reading with DiCaprio. He said she was the only girl in the auditions who looked him in the eye. Director Baz Luhrmann described his Juliet as smart and active: a character who makes decisions and drives the story.

Juliet’s character took shape in rehearsal
In a 1996 interview later republished by the Golden Globes, Danes said she and Luhrmann negotiated who Juliet would be during rehearsals. They developed a Juliet who was strong and determined as well as perceptive, innocent and vulnerable. Danes also said she rehearsed the language with DiCaprio.
Luhrmann described the actors’ rehearsal process in a contemporaneous Los Angeles Times profile as “a moment-by-moment collaboration.” He recalled that they had fun trying to understand the text. These accounts point to shared work on the characters and language, not a documented conflict.

What is known—and what remains unverified
- Established: DiCaprio and Danes auditioned, rehearsed and starred together in Luhrmann’s 1996 film. Contemporary accounts describe their work as collaborative, and public remarks included praise from both actors.
- Not established by these accounts: an off-screen romance, a feud, whether they remained in touch, or the nature of their present-day private relationship.
Entertainment Tonight noted in 2016 that the actors had not reunited onscreen by that point. That fact does not explain why they had not worked together again, and it is not proof that either avoided the other. Sensational claims of mutual dislike likewise should not be treated as fact without reliable supporting evidence.
