Giada De Laurentiis described Matt Lauer as a longtime friend and denied that they had a romantic relationship. Lauer was also reported as describing their connection as a friendship. The affair story that circulated in 2015 remains an allegation in the cited contemporary reports—not an established account of a private relationship.
What did the 2015 rumor claim?
A January 8, 2015 Fox News article, which credited the New York Post, relayed a claim from Star magazine that De Laurentiis and Lauer had a “flirty interlude” in Barbados in 2011, while Lauer was filming a “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” segment. That specific scenario is a tabloid allegation; the cited report does not independently verify it. Fox News/New York Post, January 8, 2015
What did De Laurentiis and the Today representative say?
In the same report, De Laurentiis characterized her relationship with Lauer and Bobby Flay as friendship: “My long-time friendships with my co-workers Matt Lauer and Bobby Flay are exactly that — long-time friendships.” A statement attributed to her and given to Gossip Cop said, “There has never been a romantic relationship with these two men.”
A Today representative also rejected the story, saying: “This story is false, period.” These are reported denials; they should not be treated as independent proof of private events.

What was Lauer’s reported response?
Eater reported on January 12, 2015, that Lauer told TMZ he and De Laurentiis had been friends for 10 years and had been seen together because they were friends. Eater also reported that he felt bad about what she was going through. The Eater article relays those comments rather than providing a full verbatim interview transcript. Eater, January 12, 2015
How did the rumor relate to De Laurentiis’s divorce announcement?
The rumor surfaced amid coverage of De Laurentiis’s January 2015 separation from fashion designer Todd Thompson. Eater reported that the couple had announced their split the preceding week after 11 years of marriage, and that De Laurentiis had described it as amicable. That timing is context, not evidence that an affair occurred or caused the split. Eater, January 8, 2015
