Yes—Catherine O’Hara proposed that Moira Rose wear a different wig every day. The rotating wigs were designed to express Moira’s changing moods, and the character’s distinctive look emerged through collaboration among O’Hara, Dan Levy, costume designer Debra Hanson, and the hair and makeup team.
Were Moira Rose’s wigs Catherine O’Hara’s idea?
O’Hara says the idea began in her early conversations with Eugene Levy about shaping Moira. She asked for big words and particular clothes, then added: “And I want her to wear a different wig every day.” The Guardian’s 2021 interview records her account.
That makes O’Hara the clearest source for the original proposal. It does not mean she designed every wig alone: the finished look was developed with the show’s creative and styling collaborators.
What did the wigs communicate about Moira?
The wigs were more than a running visual joke. A Television Academy 2019 hairstyling ballot describes them as “different outrageous wigs that were each created to represent her different moods.” It characterizes the design intention, but does not give a complete inventory of every wig in the series.

O’Hara also described a real-life observation behind the idea: she remembered a woman who would disappear during dinner parties and return wearing different wigs. In an Associated Press retrospective published in 2026, O’Hara connected that memory to Moira, explaining that the character’s mood on a given day would dictate her wig. This is O’Hara’s recollection, not independent documentation of the show’s production history.
Who helped create Moira’s overall look?
Moira’s style was a collaboration, not a single person’s design. Costume designer Debra Hanson told Backstage that the look came from Catherine and Dan Levy. Hanson described the wigs as developing a personality of their own alongside the clothes, with hair and makeup also contributing to the choices.

O’Hara and Hanson have both cited Daphne Guinness as an influence. That reference helped guide the look, but it does not make Guinness its sole author: the accounts describe discussion, experimentation, and a combined approach to wigs, makeup, and costume. In a 2020 Los Angeles Times interview, O’Hara explained Moira’s deliberate self-presentation: “Moira puts great care into how she presents herself; she wants the world to see who she really is, which is, of course, an off-centered target.”
How many wigs did Moira have—and were they all wigs?
The cited accounts establish the changing-wig concept, but not a definitive total. The Television Academy ballot describes the collection without counting it. These sources also do not establish whether every appearance used a full wig, or identify the wigs’ materials, maker, or cost. Those details should not be treated as settled facts.

Can you buy one of Moira’s wigs?
These sources do not verify an authorized seller of the screen-used wigs or an exact replica. A wig marketed as Moira Rose-inspired may help create a cosplay look, but without confirmation of licensing or provenance, it should not be presented as an official product or an authentic wig from the show.
