Yes. Hulk Hogan, whose legal name was Terry Bollea, admitted under oath in 1994 that he had used steroids. Contemporary reports said he described using them for 13 years. He also testified that Vince McMahon had not encouraged him to use steroids; that statement and McMahon’s later acquittal concerned different questions.

What Hogan said in 1994

Hogan testified during the federal steroid trial of wrestling promoter Vince McMahon. Contemporary coverage by The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, carrying an Associated Press report, said Hogan admitted injecting and taking steroids for 13 years. That figure is the duration attributed to his testimony in those 1994 reports, not an independently measured medical record.

The reports also said Hogan testified that McMahon had not encouraged him to use steroids. The Los Angeles Times/Associated Press account added that Hogan acknowledged they shared the drug during the 1980s. These accounts describe Hogan’s testimony; they do not establish a complete account of every person’s conduct or the full history of steroid use in wrestling.

What the 1994 verdict did—and did not—decide

McMahon was acquitted of the conspiracy charge in July 1994, as reported by both The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times/Associated Press. The verdict resolved the criminal charge against McMahon. It does not negate Hogan’s separate admission of his own steroid use, nor should it be treated as a ruling that settled every question about steroids in the WWF or the wider wrestling industry.

Why the story was already in the public eye

A 2005 U.S. House hearing record, Steroids in Sports: Cheating the System and Gambling Your Health, retrospectively noted that anabolic-steroid use among professional wrestlers, including Hogan, had drawn national attention during a 1991 steroid-trafficking trial. That reference provides historical context; it is not the underlying record of Hogan’s 1994 testimony or independent proof of specific conduct beyond what he later admitted.

What the available accounts cannot establish

The trial-era reports support the admission and the reported 13-year duration, but they do not supply a precise substance-by-substance regimen, dosages, whether Hogan had medical supervision, or a documented account of health effects in his case. Without a complete trial transcript or other records, those details should not be inferred.

Readers interested in Hogan’s own later account can consult his memoir, My Life Outside the Ring, published by Macmillan on October 27, 2009. The publisher describes it as covering his life and career and referring to hints of steroid abuse. A memoir is a firsthand account, not independent corroboration of what was said at trial.
