We Were the Lucky Ones is rooted in the real wartime experience of Georgia Hunter’s Polish Jewish family, the Kurcs. The family’s separation and survival during World War II are grounded in accounts and records Hunter gathered over years of research. But the book is historical fiction, and Hulu’s series adapts that novel: neither should be treated as a transcript of every conversation, thought, or scene.

Who were the Kurcs?

The Kurcs were a Polish Jewish family whose members were scattered as World War II overtook Poland. Their attempts to survive and find one another form the central story of We Were the Lucky Ones. Georgia Hunter was not writing about a family she had encountered from a distance: the Kurcs were her relatives, and her grandfather Addy—later known as Eddy—was part of the story.

Hunter did not grow up hearing her grandfather describe his Holocaust-era past. After his death, a school family-history assignment prompted her to interview her grandmother. A later family reunion brought her into contact with more relatives and their wartime accounts. That discovery set her on a years-long effort to piece together what had happened.

How much of the story is true?

Hunter has said that the major events in the novel’s account are based on what happened to her family. She described “Every significant movement, incarceration, brush with death, and escape described in the book” as real. She also said that the narrative’s “key milestones” rest on oral histories, primary sources, and other tangible research.

Those statements support the broad survival story and its major milestones; they do not make the novel a documentary transcript. A historical novel has to turn evidence into scenes, shape a timeline, and render people’s experiences in narrative form. The publisher describes the book as historical fiction, with multiple perspectives and historical interludes. A reader should therefore distinguish between a documented family event and the particular wording, private thought, or scene construction used to tell it.

How Georgia Hunter reconstructed her family’s history

Hunter drew on accounts from living relatives and members of the next generation, as well as testimony preserved in the USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive. She has said she relied heavily on details in those recordings. Her work also involved letters, photographs, archival searches, and other records.

These sources can corroborate important events and preserve memories that might otherwise be lost, but they do not necessarily record every moment in a person’s life. Hunter has acknowledged that there may be events she did not uncover. The careful conclusion is that the novel’s central family history has a substantial oral and documentary basis, while some parts of its narrative necessarily involve reconstruction.

What is different about the Hulu series?

The Hulu limited series adapts Hunter’s novel rather than presenting itself as an independent documentary reconstruction. Hunter participated in the adaptation and shared recordings, notes, and records with the creative team. That involvement connects the production to the family research behind the book, but it does not establish that every television scene was separately verified against a primary record.

For a specific scene, the available accounts do not provide a complete scene-by-scene audit of what is documented, compressed, or dramatized. It is safest to treat the series as a screen adaptation of a historically grounded novel—not to assume that every line of dialogue or visual detail happened exactly as shown.
