The Spiderwick Chronicles Season 1 has an inviting premise: a family moves into an old home, discovers that magical creatures are real, and must protect a field guide from an ogre. The eight-episode 2024 adaptation has a clear appeal for viewers seeking family-centered dark fantasy, but the critical response was mixed to negative, citing uneven pacing, repetitive plotting, underdeveloped characters, and too little whimsy. It may be worth sampling for its premise and family drama; book readers should approach it as an adaptation, not assume a close retelling.
What is The Spiderwick Chronicles Season 1 about?
The Roku Channel series follows Helen Grace and her children—fraternal twins Jared and Simon, both 15, and their sister Mallory—after they move to their ancestral home, Spiderwick. Jared encounters a boggart and learns that magical creatures exist. Their great-aunt Lucinda urges him to find pages from her father’s field guide and keep them out of the hands of Mulgarath, an ogre who wants to use them.
Paramount Global Content lists the season as a live-action kids-and-family title with eight episodes. Its principal cast includes Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared, Noah Cottrell as Simon, Mychala Lee as Mallory, Jack Dylan Grazer as Thimbletack, and Christian Slater as Mulgarath. The first six episode runtimes listed by Apple TV range from 44 to 48 minutes.
Is Season 1 worth watching?
It depends on what you want from a fantasy adventure. The family’s move, the hidden creature world, and the hunt for the guide’s missing pages provide a strong starting point. The main question is whether those ingredients develop into a sufficiently imaginative and propulsive story. Critics who were less persuaded pointed to repetition, lumpy pacing, weakly developed characters, and decisions that were hard to follow.

#1 Best Overall
For families looking for another fantasy series after Percy Jackson, The Daily Beast’s Caroline Siede offered a more qualified recommendation, while cautioning viewers not to expect much bona fide magic. That captures the likely divide: the setup may be enough to draw in viewers who enjoy family drama and creature mythology, but those looking for abundant whimsy or a consistently compelling adventure may find the execution lacking.
What did critics and viewers think?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 46% Tomatometer from 13 critic reviews and a 73% Popcornmeter from 100+ ratings when checked. These are time-sensitive aggregator figures, not fixed verdicts or a representative measure of every viewer’s response. The site’s critic consensus calls the series “a lackluster adaptation that’s in need of greater imagination and purpose.”
Rank #2
- Plot and pacing: The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han criticized repetitive plotting and lumpy pacing.
- Whimsy: Variety’s Aramide Tinubu argued that the show lacks the whimsy needed to elevate its story for a new generation of young adults.
- Character work: Han also pointed to underdeveloped characters and inexplicable decisions, concerns that can weaken the family drama as well as the fantasy plot.
These objections focus on execution rather than the basic appeal of the premise. A viewer deciding whether to continue might ask whether the creature mythology feels vivid, whether the page-search structure keeps episodes moving, and whether the Grace family’s emotional story earns its place alongside the adventure.
How closely does the series follow the books?
The series is based on the novels by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, and both authors are credited as executive producers. That establishes the connection to the books, but it does not establish how closely the show follows them scene by scene. It is safest to approach the screen version as an adaptation rather than expect a particular degree of fidelity.

What did Roku say about its launch?
Roku announced on March 26, 2024, that the series would premiere on April 19 and stream free on The Roku Channel. That was a statement about the launch offer, not a guarantee of current availability in every country. Check Roku’s current listing and your region’s access before making plans to watch.
In an April 23, 2024 company blog post, Roku said the show ranked first on its service by reach and engagement during opening weekend and was its most-watched on-demand debut by unique viewers and hours streamed for a single day and the first three days. Roku did not publish audience totals or an independently audited comparison in that post, so the claim is best understood as the company’s description of its own platform performance.
The same post attributes this line from the finale to Aunt Lucinda, with wording by showrunner Aron Coleite: “Having someone believe in you is the most powerful form of magic there is.”
