The National Motorcycle Museum says the bike wrecked in the film’s ending is the only Captain America motorcycle known to survive—but competing authentication claims have left the identity of the surviving screen-used bike disputed. The motorcycle displayed by the museum is a tribute replica, not the film relic.
How many Captain America bikes were made for Easy Rider?
Four choppers were built for the film: two Captain America bikes for Peter Fonda’s Wyatt and two Billy bikes for Dennis Hopper’s character. The National Motorcycle Museum credits filmmaker Cliff Vaughs with organizing the builds alongside experienced chopper builder Ben Hardy; Fonda and Hopper commissioned them. The motorcycles were not the work of a single builder acting alone. National Motorcycle Museum, July 12, 2019; Los Angeles Times, October 17, 2014.
The chopper style was already developing before the movie. The museum says Easy Rider helped cement and popularize the look internationally, making the Captain America bike an enduring screen image rather than the origin of the chopper itself.
What happened to the original film motorcycles?
The National Motorcycle Museum says one Captain America bike was wrecked in the film’s ending and identifies that crash bike as the only one known to survive. It says the other Captain America motorcycle and both Billy bikes were stolen and never seen again. The museum’s account does not mean its own displayed motorcycle is the wrecked original: its display is explicitly a replica.

Which “Captain America” chopper is the real film relic?
The surviving bike’s identity became contentious because Dan Haggerty authenticated two different Captain America motorcycles at different times. In the account published by the Los Angeles Times on October 17, 2014, Haggerty had sold a bike to Gordon Granger in 1996 and authenticated it, then later said that bike was not the real one. Haggerty identified a different motorcycle—the one he sold to John Parham and which Michael Eisenberg later consigned—as the crash bike.
Peter Fonda had signed an authentication for the latter motorcycle, but told the newspaper that he had relied on Haggerty and could no longer tell which bike was genuine. Of his earlier authentication, Fonda said: “That was my mistake.” The competing claims mean a certificate or confident seller’s assertion alone does not settle the motorcycle’s provenance. The museum’s account identifies the crash bike as the sole known survivor, but the 2014 reporting documents why the identity attached to a particular claimed original remains disputed. Los Angeles Times, October 17, 2014; National Motorcycle Museum, July 12, 2019.

What to check when evaluating an authenticity claim
- Chain of custody: Look for a documented ownership history, not just a story attached to the motorcycle.
- Claimed film role: Establish whether the bike is said to be a hero, stunt, or crash bike; those descriptions are not interchangeable.
- Authentication details: Identify who signed or made the claim, when it was made, and whether that person later changed or withdrew it.
- Original or replica: Confirm that the object is claimed to be a screen-used prop rather than a later tribute build.
- Bike-specific specifications: Check that any engine or performance figures refer to that exact motorcycle, rather than a replica or a general description of the film design.
What did the Captain America chopper look like?
The museum’s description of its tribute bike highlights the familiar design: high handlebars, an American-flag-painted peanut tank, a Panhead motor, a rigid chrome frame, an extended fork, a narrow front tire and wider rear tire, a stepped seat, and a sissy bar. These are details of the museum’s replica; they should not automatically be treated as a verified specification sheet for the surviving screen-used motorcycle. National Motorcycle Museum, July 8, 2016.
For its tribute example, the museum lists a 74-cubic-inch (1,208-cc) engine, 52 horsepower, and a 95-mph top speed. Those are museum-published specifications for the replica, not independently verified performance figures for the original film bike. The museum recommends Paul d’Orleans’s The Chopper: The Real Story for further reading on the motorcycles and chopper history; the book offers context, not proof of which surviving motorcycle appeared in the film. National Motorcycle Museum, July 8, 2016.

How much did a claimed Captain America bike sell for?
The Los Angeles Times reported that a disputed Captain America motorcycle sold at auction in October 2014 for $1.35 million before fees, or more than $1.6 million including fees. That is a historical reported sale of a bike whose provenance was disputed; it does not establish that the motorcycle was authentic or indicate its current value. Los Angeles Times, October 19, 2014; Los Angeles Times, October 17, 2014.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where is the surviving Captain America bike now?
The available accounts do not establish a reliable present-day location or public-display status. The National Motorcycle Museum’s 2019 article gives conflicting location descriptions: one places the motorcycle in the late Paul Allen’s collection in Washington, while another says the real bike lives in California. Without a newer authoritative confirmation, neither should be presented as its current location.
