Netflix’s Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing is a three-part documentary about Piper Rockelle, her mother and manager Tiffany Smith, and former members of the group known as The Squad. It recounts allegations made by former collaborators and the lawsuit that followed, but it is not a court verdict: Smith and co-defendant Hunter Hill denied the allegations, and the case ended in a settlement.
What is Bad Influence about?
Released on Netflix on April 9, 2025, Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing examines Rockelle’s rise as a young online creator and the working relationships around her videos. Netflix describes The Squad as a rotating group of young collaborators. Former members named in Netflix’s account include Sophie Fergi, Gavin Magnus, Sawyer Sharbino, Hayden Haas, Corinne Joy, Jentzen Ramirez, Claire RockSmith, and Symonne Harrison; the roster changed over time.
The series was directed by Jenna Rosher and Kief Davidson and produced by Decoy Productions, according to Netflix. Netflix lists it as a documentary with three episodes and a TV-MA rating. Its catalog details, including audio and subtitle options, can vary by region and may change.
The documentary’s story is built around accounts from former collaborators, the dispute between them and the adults who managed the work, and questions about the business surrounding child creators. Netflix’s promotional phrase “Billions of views. Millions of dollars.” is not accompanied by a precise figure or methodology in its cited description, so it should not be treated as an independently verified statistic.

What happened in the lawsuit?
The 2022 claims
In January 2022, 11 former Squad members sued Smith and Hunter Hill, seeking $22 million. The plaintiffs alleged exploitation, labor violations, and abusive conduct. Those are allegations made in the lawsuit, not findings established by a trial. Netflix reported that Smith and Hill denied them.
The Los Angeles Times reported that its 2022 investigation reviewed court filings, emails, casting calls, talent releases, filming schedules, and interviews. The Times also reported that Rockelle defended her mother after the suit was filed. Smith told the Times: “This whole case is based on lies that are driven by financial jealousy.” That is Smith’s characterization of the claims, not a court’s conclusion.

The settlement and other court milestones
The case settled for $1.85 million in October 2024, according to Netflix and the Los Angeles Times. A settlement resolves litigation; by itself, it neither proves nor disproves the disputed allegations. One plaintiff, identified by Netflix Tudum as Sophie, said: “This lawsuit was never about money — it was to make sure she couldn’t do what she did to me to another kid.” Her statement describes her perspective on why the suit was brought.
A 2026 Southern California Law Review note recounts that Smith filed a $30 million countersuit in 2023 and later dropped it. The note also says a judge denied Smith’s motion for summary judgment in March 2024, before the settlement. These are procedural events, not findings on the merits of every allegation.

Was Piper Rockelle herself sued?
The lawsuit described in the cited reporting was filed by former Squad members against Smith and Hill, not against Rockelle. The documentary centers on Rockelle as the creator around whom the group’s videos and relationships formed, but that narrative focus should not be confused with the identities of the defendants in the case.
Why does the case matter beyond the people involved?
The dispute raises broader questions about how children’s work in online entertainment is managed and monetized. A creator’s videos may reach large audiences, but that alone does not answer who controls the work, how earnings are allocated, what working conditions are appropriate, or who safeguards a child’s privacy and image.

- Work and labor protections: What counts as work when a child appears in online content, and what rules govern hours, conditions, and adult oversight?
- Compensation and control: Who receives or manages income connected to a child’s appearances, and what protections ensure the child benefits?
- Privacy and image: How much say should a child have over the continued circulation and commercial use of videos featuring them?
- Responsibility: What duties belong to parents, managers, production partners, and platforms?
Taylor Lorenz, whom the Los Angeles Times identifies as the author of Extremely Online, says in the documentary: “When it comes to new forms of work and new media, there are no labor protections.” This is a reported perspective, not a judicial or regulatory finding. A 2026 Southern California Law Review analysis treats labor and privacy as distinct concerns and argues that existing protections are inadequate. That is legal scholarship, not a definitive statement of the law everywhere; the applicable rules depend on jurisdiction.

Bad Influence presents a real dispute and a documented legal outcome, but viewers should keep four kinds of information separate: the former collaborators’ allegations, Smith and Hill’s denials, the reported procedural history, and the broader interpretation offered by the documentary or legal scholars. The settlement is part of the story, not a substitute for a verdict on contested facts.
