American Murder: Laci Peterson revisits Laci Peterson’s 2002 disappearance and the investigation and trial that followed. Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering Laci and their unborn son. A later California Supreme Court ruling changed his death sentence because of jury-selection errors at the penalty phase; it did not overturn the murder convictions. Later challenges to the convictions had different outcomes, and the status of further review was not confirmed in the records available as of October 4, 2026.
What the Netflix documentary covers
Netflix describes American Murder: Laci Peterson as a three-part 2024 documentary directed by Skye Borgman. It draws on news footage, interrogation material and courtroom footage, with interviews involving detectives, reporters, lawyers, jurors, Amber Frey, Laci’s mother Sharon Rocha and Laci’s childhood friends. Netflix says the series revisits the disappearance, investigation and trial. That is the platform’s description of the series, not an independent assessment of every scene or disputed claim.
The episode descriptions follow the case’s broad chronology: Laci’s disappearance on Christmas Eve 2002; the revelation that Amber Frey had been in a relationship with Scott Peterson; and Scott’s arrest and trial. Netflix describes testimony from key witnesses as pivotal in the final episode. The first two episode titles are “What Do You Mean, Missing?” and “I Wasn’t a Mistress.”
The documentary is a way into the case, but it is not a substitute for the court record. An episode summary or interview can show how the series presents an issue; it does not, by itself, establish a disputed allegation as fact or tell viewers what a court later decided.

What the jury decided
The jury convicted Scott Peterson of first-degree murder for killing his wife, Laci, and second-degree murder for killing their unborn son. Netflix’s description notes that Scott pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence. His continuing claim of innocence is a party’s position; it does not change the jury’s verdict.
The distinction matters when describing the case: the jury returned two murder convictions, while a later challenge to the way jurors were selected concerned the penalty phase and the death sentence. It did not erase the convictions.

What the California Supreme Court changed
The California Supreme Court’s opinion record identifies significant jury-selection errors that undermined Scott Peterson’s right to an impartial jury at the penalty phase. The court’s ruling affected the death sentence, not the jury’s findings of guilt. The convictions for Laci’s murder and the murder of their unborn son remained in place.

Several later proceedings are relevant, but they should not be collapsed into one appeal. The April 2026 petition described by the Stanislaus County District Attorney was distinct from a separate juror-misconduct habeas matter referenced by the Los Angeles Innocence Project.
Rank #3
| Proceeding | Date and source | What the record says |
|---|---|---|
| Third habeas petition | April 27, 2026 ruling; described in the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s May 12, 2026 press release | The DA’s account says San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth M. Hill denied the petition in full, rejecting all 14 claims. This is the prosecutor’s description of the ruling. |
| Response to the third-petition ruling | Los Angeles Innocence Project statement, April 28, 2026 | The organization disputed the trial court’s treatment of the claims and said it intended to seek review in a higher court. That statement reports the organization’s position and intention, not a court finding or confirmation that review was filed. |
| Separate juror-misconduct habeas matter | California appellate docket opened for that matter | The docket records that claim 1 was denied on August 1, 2025, and that the case was marked complete. The Los Angeles Innocence Project separately described this matter as pending in the California Supreme Court in its April 28, 2026 statement; the docket information alone does not establish the later status of every proceeding. |
As of October 4, 2026, the available records do not verify whether a higher-court appeal from the April 2026 denial was filed or resolved. They also do not conclusively establish the current status of the separate California Supreme Court matter. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that all appeals are over or that a new trial is pending on the basis of these records.

How to separate the documentary’s account from the legal record
- For the series’ scope: Netflix’s official title and series descriptions identify its format, participants and episode progression.
- For the verdict and penalty-phase ruling: the California Supreme Court opinion record is the relevant source for distinguishing the convictions from the death sentence.
- For the April 2026 petition: the District Attorney’s release gives the prosecution’s account of the judge’s ruling; the Los Angeles Innocence Project’s statement gives the organization’s response. Neither party’s characterization should be presented as a finding beyond what the court decided.
- For later status: a current docket is needed to establish whether further review was filed or resolved. The separate juror-misconduct matter should not be treated as the same proceeding as the third petition.
