His roles in The Breakfast Club and The Dark Knight
The Breakfast Club
In John Hughes’s 1985 film, Dean played Andy’s strict father. Andy, played by Emilio Estevez, is one of the five students serving Saturday detention; Dean’s role is a supporting family part, not a leading role. Rotten Tomatoes lists Dean as Andy’s father.
The Dark Knight
In Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film, Dean played Detective Wuertz. The Sun-Times described the film as his last appearance in a major motion picture. His part was a supporting detective role within the film’s larger ensemble. Rotten Tomatoes identifies the character as Wuertz.

A Chicago career shaped by a second chance
The Sun-Times obituary describes Dean’s early life on Chicago’s North Side as troubled, including crime and stays in reform school. It also reports that he was involved in the fatal 1955 shooting of Chicago Police Officer Albert Brown, and frames acting as a later second chance. Those details are part of the newspaper’s account of his life; they should not eclipse the decades of work that followed.
Dean’s career also extended to the stage. El País reported that he received a 1996 Joseph Jefferson Award nomination as a supporting actor for his performance as Supple in Combat with Steppenwolf Theatre Company: El País obituary.
