John Wayne was talking about a scene in True Grit (1969), not declaring the film his career-best performance. In a 1969 interview with Roger Ebert, he said: “I guess that scene in ‘True Grit’ is about the best scene I ever did.” The qualification matters: it was Wayne’s own assessment, not an objective ranking.
Which scene did John Wayne mean?
Wayne meant a quieter exchange between Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross. As they wait together, Cogburn talks about his former wife, his son and his independence. Rather than leaning only on the hard-drinking marshal’s familiar swagger, the scene gives him room to speak personally.
The scene description is reported by Liam Gaughan’s March 4, 2026, AOL article. The quotation comes from Roger Ebert’s 1969 interview with Wayne, “Interview with John Wayne (1969)”. The interview page was not accessible when checked, so the short quotation is reported from its search-result excerpt.
What Wayne actually said—and what the headline changes
Wayne’s words were: “I guess that scene in ‘True Grit’ is about the best scene I ever did.” “I guess” and “about” make this a qualified personal judgment. Calling it the best performance of his entire career turns that remark into a firmer, broader claim than the reported quotation supports. The defensible answer is that Wayne singled out one scene in True Grit as, in his view, about the best he had done.

Why the scene matters in True Grit
Henry Hathaway’s 1969 western stars Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, a one-eyed U.S. marshal. The role became a defining part of Wayne’s career, and he won the Actor award for the film at the 42nd Academy Awards, held April 7, 1970. The American Film Institute identifies it as his only Academy Award for Best Actor.
That award is useful context, but it does not prove that Wayne’s favored scene was objectively his finest work. The Oscar recognized his performance in the film; his interview remark identifies a scene he personally valued. Those are different kinds of evidence.
