The Traitors looks like a game unfolding inside an old Scottish castle, but its atmosphere depends on careful production design as much as on the players’ suspicions. Ardross Castle and the Highlands provide the setting; concealed filming infrastructure helps make the building work on camera; and strict separation away from set protects the mystery. Producers have described those broad principles, while keeping some practical details private so they do not give the game away.
How the game works—and where production steps back
In the UK format, contestants are assigned opposing roles: Traitors secretly eliminate players, while Faithfuls try to identify and banish them. Missions build the prize pot, but they are deliberately distinct from the central mystery. Executive producer Mike Cotton said missions give both groups a chance to work together and provide a break from the game’s suspicion and strategy. The Royal Television Society’s 12 July 2023 report describes this approach.
Cotton summed up the production philosophy as: “You set up the rules and then you let them go.” That does not mean the show is unplanned. Producers design the framework, prepare missions and selected set pieces, then allow the contestants’ decisions and relationships to drive the unfolding game. The Guardian’s 8 October 2025 behind-the-scenes report also says role assignment takes player interviews and preferences into account.
Why Ardross Castle and the Highlands suit the show
The UK and US editions covered by Screen Highland’s Ardross Castle page have filmed at Ardross and across the wider Highland region. The appeal is practical as well as visual: the estate offers privacy, space and a variety of filming locations. The landscape and castle give the show a coherent, secluded world, while the surrounding region gives production more than one kind of backdrop.

According to producer interviews reported by the Los Angeles Times on 9 June 2025, the team considered more than 40 castles before choosing Ardross. That is a historical selection figure, not a measure of how many locations the show uses today.
The castle is a filming location, not one continuous set
Production uses a limited portion of the building rather than treating the entire castle as a single ready-made television set. The Los Angeles Times report describes concealed cameras, built-in filming infrastructure and constructed panels that help adapt the space for shooting. The arrangements let the show preserve the castle’s visual character while accommodating the practical needs of a large production.

Rooms can change purpose between seasons, too. One concealed room behind a bookcase has had different uses, according to the same report. That detail illustrates how the production can rework a familiar-looking environment without implying that every room, corridor or castle feature is part of the filmed game.
How secrecy shapes contestants’ lives off camera
Keeping players from sharing information outside the game is essential to a social-deduction format. In its October 2025 set visit, the Guardian reported that contestants slept off-site, were kept apart when not on set and met with a welfare team twice daily. Those are details from that report’s production context; they should not be assumed to describe every season or both the UK and US editions.

- Wise Guys is a quick to learn, cut throat, area control boardgame where you play as one of four rival gangs seeking to strike it rich as “Rum Runners” on the rough streets of Chicago at the height of the roaring 20’s.
- Wheel, deal, and fight to control locations. Buy/sell alcohol, get politicians elected and get help in return or double-cross rival gangs. Negotiate, threaten and ally with them, but beware the inevitable knife in the back…
- Players roll to choose their gang, then set themselves up with a respectable front of neighbourhood business men and their associates, whilst keeping their resources, money, guns & booze hidden from their rivals.
- Taking control of real-life gangsters, such as Al ‘Scarface’ Capone, Dean O’Banion, ‘Polack Joe’ Saltis & Ralph Sheldon, players issue orders for their Made Men & Associates exploiting profitable opportunities as they arise.
- Everything you need to turn Chicago upside down is included in the box. Experience the glitz and glamour of the roaring 20’s as a gang boss in Prohibition-era Chicago!
The Los Angeles Times reports that producers declined to specify sleeping arrangements, explaining that disclosing logistics could compromise the game’s secrecy. The contrast points to a deliberate boundary: producers have discussed the purpose of protecting the game, but some operational details remain undisclosed. There is no basis here to turn that silence into claims about unreported tricks or procedures.

The show’s mood is constructed through the relationship between its host and location as well as through the game. Executive producer Sarah Fay told the Royal Television Society: “We wanted Claudia to feel like the lady of the manor, part of the castle and part of the drama.” The line captures the intended effect: the host should seem woven into the world of the game, rather than simply presenting it from outside.

- Interactive Murder Mystery Game: This party game is driven by an electronic phone that makes calls, remembers your answers & dispatches the killer’s demands for a unique experience with every play
- Social Deduction Game: Players secretly receive their role through the phone; play as a loyal friend trying to save the victim or hidden traitor working with the killer to sabotage the group's efforts
- Work Together, Trust No One: In this cooperative game, players must search rooms of a cabin to find keys & save their friend, but accomplices & bad actors among you will lie & waste precious time
- Interactive Phone: With a retro landline phone that calls the shots, this is an engaging strategy game for 4-10 players, ages 13 and up, who are ready for an intense game night of mystery & betrayal
- Party Games For Adult Games Night: Throw the best party ever with more party games for adults & families: Decodables, Tell Me Without Telling Me, Would You Rather?, Dumb Ways to Die & more
That atmosphere is carefully produced, but the central uncertainty belongs to the contestants. Missions and selected set pieces provide structure; the Traitors’ choices, the Faithfuls’ suspicions and the group’s deliberations supply the drama that cannot be scripted in advance.
What the dated figures do—and do not—tell you
The Royal Television Society reported in July 2023 that the BBC series had accumulated 34 million iPlayer views at that point. Its report also noted two RTS Awards and two BAFTA Awards for the show and Claudia Winkleman’s performance as of publication. These are dated milestones, not current cumulative viewership or awards totals.
