The MiG-28 in the 1986 film Top Gun is fictional. The aircraft used to portray its adversaries were Northrop F-5s, a real aircraft family that the U.S. Navy has used for simulated air-to-air combat training. The movie’s invented enemy jet therefore has a real-world counterpart in the aircraft that appeared on screen and in the Navy’s adversary-training role.

Is the MiG-28 a real aircraft?

No. “MiG-28” is a fictional designation in Top Gun, not the name of an actual MiG aircraft. The film’s adversary aircraft were Northrop F-5s, according to the Los Angeles Times’ reporting on the film.

What aircraft portrayed the MiG-28?

Northrop F-5s stood in for the fictional MiG-28s. This is the practical distinction to keep in mind: the MiG-28 is the enemy aircraft within the story, while the F-5 is the real aircraft used for the portrayal.

That production fact does not establish that the fictional jet was modeled on any particular Soviet aircraft. The sources available here do not explain why the filmmakers chose the “MiG-28” name or establish a specific design inspiration.

The F/A-18E Super Hornet is inevitably stealing your eyes on the cool aircraft, but the main appearance of the Top Gun Maverick is the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The F/A-18 has an E type and F type with a hot wheel motif, but the front is a single seat, and the rear is duplicated. The maximum speed is 1.6 M and the total length is 6.9 ft (18.31 m). Why the F-5 fits the story’s adversary role

The F-5’s real-world training role provides a useful parallel to its screen role. The U.S. Navy describes the F-5N Tiger II as a single-seat, twin-engine tactical fighter and attack aircraft that provides simulated air-to-air combat training. The Navy’s F-5N/F fact file also describes the aircraft’s development and adversary-aircraft context.

In training, an adversary aircraft gives pilots an opponent for simulated air combat. In Top Gun, F-5s played the opposing aircraft in a fictional confrontation. The overlap is real, but it does not make the MiG-28 a real aircraft or prove that every detail of the film’s fictional jet came from Navy training practice.

How the real TOPGUN school fits in

TOPGUN is a real Navy school, but its history should be separated from the film’s characters and plot. The U.S. Department of Defense recounts that early TOPGUN instruction used F-4 Phantom II aircraft for one-on-one aerial-combat training during a four-week course. That is institutional history; Maverick, the film’s specific encounters, and the MiG-28 belong to the movie. See the Department of Defense account of TOPGUN.

What the production archive shows—and what it does not

Skydance’s description of the Top Gun archive says it includes footage of F-14s, MiGs, F-5s, and A-5s in flight and simulated dogfights. This provides production context: the archive contained footage of multiple aircraft types and simulated engagements. It does not independently identify every aircraft in every finished scene, nor does it settle the fictional MiG-28’s design.
