This watchlist uses awards recognition as its clearest evidence, while helping you choose by genre, mood and how much prior-series context you need. Its strongest award-backed picks include Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Oshi no Ko and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners—with an important distinction: some cited awards ceremonies took place in 2024 or honored earlier releases.
How to read this 2023 anime list
“Top” can mean popular with viewers, praised by critics, or recognized by an awards program. The available evidence here supports an award-informed shortlist, not a definitive cross-industry ranking. Awards are useful signals, but they do not establish universal consensus or measure every viewer’s taste.

Release year and ceremony year are not interchangeable. The Crunchyroll Anime Awards ceremony held in 2023 recognized eligible anime from an earlier release period; its winners should not be presented as a complete list of anime released during calendar 2023. The 2024 ceremony provides a more direct awards starting point for several 2023-era selections.
Award-backed anime to consider
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 — the strongest award-backed 2023-era pick
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 won Anime of the Year at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. That is a clear reason to put it near the top of an award-informed watchlist, though the award is not a claim that every viewer will rank it first. It is a continuing season, so newcomers should begin with the earlier installments rather than treating Season 2 as a standalone entry. Crunchyroll’s 2024 winners announcement.

Oshi no Ko — a nominee-backed alternative
Oshi no Ko appeared among the nominees in the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards announcement. Nomination is recognition, not a win, but it makes the series a worthwhile option for viewers looking beyond the Anime of the Year winner. The nominee list alone does not establish a definitive overall rank. See the full 2024 nominee announcement.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — distinguish the award year from the release year
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners won Anime of the Year at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The ceremony year is 2023; that result is not evidence that it was a new calendar-2023 release. It is best included as a notable award-winning watch if you are using “top anime of 2023” loosely to mean titles prominent in the 2023 awards conversation, rather than limiting the list strictly to releases from that year. Rank #2
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Entertainment District Arc — action and animation honors
The Entertainment District Arc won both Action and Animation at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Those category wins make it a particularly relevant pick for viewers seeking action or visually driven spectacle. As with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, these are results from the 2023 ceremony, not a complete calendar-2023 release ranking; the arc also belongs to an ongoing series rather than standing alone. Review the 2023 ceremony’s winners.
Choose by what you want to watch
| Pick | Why it belongs here | Best fit | Commitment and context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 | Anime of the Year winner at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards | Viewers choosing by a major award result | Continuing series; watch earlier installments first |
| Oshi no Ko | Listed among nominees for the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards | Viewers who want a nominee-recognized alternative | Series; the nominee announcement does not establish its standalone suitability |
| Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | Anime of the Year winner at the 2023 ceremony | Viewers interested in an award winner from that ceremony | Do not confuse 2023 ceremony recognition with a calendar-2023 release |
| Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Entertainment District Arc | 2023 ceremony winner for Action and Animation | Viewers prioritizing action and animation honors | Continuing series arc; ceremony result does not make it a calendar-2023 release |

What the 2023 awards vote does—and does not—show
Crunchyroll reported about 18 million votes from fans in more than 200 countries and regions for its 2023 awards. That figure measures participation in that awards program. It is not a count of all anime viewers, a measure of critical consensus, or proof of a universal ranking. Crunchyroll’s 2023 awards announcement.
