Girija Devi’s musical career was helped by three conditions: her father supported her training, her marriage allowed public performance while restricting some venues, and radio and concert platforms brought her before wider audiences. These circumstances created opportunities, but they do not by themselves explain her stature. Her years of study, command of several vocal forms and artistic work were central to her legacy.
1. Her father made sustained musical training possible
According to a biographical account published by Scroll, Girija Devi’s father, Babu Ramdas Rai, loved music and arranged a teacher for her when she was young. The account says her mother questioned music as an uncertain future for a girl, while her father and guru supported her studies.

The account’s family recollections give this support a practical meaning: it helped her begin learning and continue despite doubts about whether a musical career was suitable for a woman. The Sangeet Natak Akademi independently records that she began studying music at five with Sarju Prasad Misra and later continued with Shrichandra Misra.
2. Marriage permitted performance, but set boundaries
Scroll reports that her father chose Madhusudan Jain as her husband, and that he agreed she could sing. The arrangement was not unrestricted permission: according to the account, she was discouraged from performing at private gatherings in royal homes or the homes of wealthy patrons, and directed instead toward major music conferences and radio.
#1 Best Overall
Girija Devi recalled the terms this way: “He said sing but don’t agree to those private mehfils in royal courts and homes of rich,” she said. “Pick big music conferences, sing on the radio, he said.” The restriction shaped her route to an audience even as it left public performance open to her.
3. Focused practice and public platforms helped build her career
Solitude for practice
Scroll recounts that Girija Devi asked to live in Sarnath so she could concentrate on music while managing domestic responsibilities. In the account’s quoted recollection, she said: “I needed solitude. I asked my husband for a home in Sarnath and we moved. I would meditate on music here, this steady concentration taught me strong breath control and how to use it to stay on a taan. It was like I was intoxicated.”

Radio and conference appearances
The same account dates her Allahabad Radio debut to 1949 and describes a 1951 performance at a conference in Ara. It says she performed after Omkarnath Thakur’s car broke down, received a public ovation and gained further conference opportunities. These career details are reported by Scroll; they show how broadcast and concert stages could turn the ability developed in practice into public recognition.
Training and repertoire behind the opportunities
Opportunity alone cannot account for Girija Devi’s musical stature. The Sangeet Natak Akademi’s official citation describes her as a leading Hindustani vocalist and praises her khayal singing for “great clarity and control.” It identifies her as an outstanding exponent of thumri, tappa, hori, chaiti and kajri as well as khayal.

These sources establish the breadth of her repertoire and the recognition of her artistic contribution; they do not reduce her influence to a single genre or to the circumstances of her personal life.

- 3 Padma awards — Government of India, 1972, 1989 and 2016. The dates correspond to the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, respectively, as listed by the PIB retrospective.
- 1 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani vocal music — Sangeet Natak Akademi, 1977.
The ITC Sangeet Research Academy memorial also records her three Padma honours, the Akademi Award and Fellowship, and her command of thumri, kajri, chaiti, tappa and khayal. The honors document institutional recognition; they are evidence of her standing, not a substitute for the musical training and performance that shaped it.
