The episode’s official synopsis also introduces an offer from an old spymaster that could help Ben—but the available episode details do not establish a definitive breaking-point scene between the partners.
What happens in “Pawns and Kings”?
Episode 6 begins from the consequences of Ben and Raife’s unauthorized raid: Al-Jabouri’s allies retaliate against them, according to the Prime Video episode synopsis. That response puts the two men under pressure while the episode’s mission centers on taking nuclear bearings “off the board.” TV Insider’s episode 6 preview describes that mission as taking a dangerous turn.
The official synopsis adds another possible complication for Ben: an offer from an old spymaster that might solve his problems. It does not specify the offer’s terms or establish how Ben responds, so those details should not be treated as confirmed here.
Why Ben and Raife’s partnership is under strain
The episode’s verified conflict places the consequences of the raid alongside a high-risk mission. That combination creates a clear source of pressure for the partnership: Ben and Raife must contend with retaliation connected to their shared action while dealing with a threat involving nuclear bearings. The synopsis supports that tension, but does not establish a precise emotional turning point or a final rupture between them.

The series follows Ben’s path from the Navy SEALs into CIA Special Operations, with Taylor Kitsch playing Ben and Tom Hopper playing Raife, as described in Amazon’s announcement. The episode’s conflict can therefore be read as part of the pressures shaping Ben’s trajectory, rather than proof that the partnership has definitively ended.
Where episode 6 sits in the season
“Pawns and Kings” is the sixth of seven episodes in the first season. Amazon’s schedule placed episode 6 on September 17, 2025, with the finale, episode 7, scheduled for September 24, 2025. TV Insider’s finale explainer describes episode 7’s Langley testimony frame involving Haverford and Raife; that framing belongs to the finale, not to the verified account of episode 6.

For franchise context, Dark Wolf is a Ben-focused prequel to The Terminal List, whose original story centers on James Reece. Amazon describes the prequel as taking place seven years before the original series, while the Associated Press describes the interval as about five years. Because those accounts conflict, the exact gap is not settled here. The AP report also quotes Kitsch describing his approach to Ben: “I take the utmost pride to be authentic and rooted in Ben, but there’s a dark side to service.” That is a general comment on portraying the character, not an explanation of this episode’s events.
