After Conrad admits he still wants her during their storm-stranded motel stop, Belly kisses Jeremiah the next morning. The finale leaves her longer-term future open, ending instead on her independence and return to volleyball.
What happens in the Season 2 finale?
On the drive home from Brown, Conrad is hurt after finding Belly and Jeremiah kissing. A storm closes the highway, forcing the three of them to stop at a motel with one bed. The road-trip tension gives way to a difficult conversation about what Belly should know before she decides between the brothers.
Jeremiah tells Belly she should know that Conrad still loves her. Conrad admits that he still wants her. The next morning, Belly kisses Jeremiah. Her action makes her choice in this episode clear: she chooses Jeremiah.
Why does Conrad return the infinity necklace?
After Belly chooses Jeremiah, Conrad says he did not mean what he told her the night before. He gives her back the infinity necklace and leaves. The gesture reads as an attempt to step aside and give Belly space, not as a happy or easy resolution: he is visibly hurt, and ELLE reports that co-showrunner Jenny Han described him as surprised and still processing the sudden change.

The necklace makes the separation tangible, but it does not settle what Conrad or Belly may feel later. In this finale, it marks Conrad’s response to Belly’s present choice.
What do the final scenes mean?
Belly returns to volleyball
Jeremiah drives Belly to volleyball camp and stays to watch her play. The finale ends with Belly playing, centered in the image rather than defined only by her relationships with the Fisher brothers. Her closing voiceover, transcribed by TIME, says: “The future is unclear. But it’s still mine.”

The line acknowledges uncertainty while making clear that Belly sees her future as her own to shape. Han told TIME that she wanted Belly to take responsibility for her decisions and have agency: “I really wanted Belly to get to a place where she is the one in the driver’s seat. The mistakes that she makes, the missteps and her stumbles, they’re all her decisions and she’s really owning it. That’s really important, to give her that autonomy and that agency.”
Conrad returns to the Cousins house
Conrad goes back to the Cousins Beach house and starts restoring it. The image offers a hopeful practical development in his effort to save the house; it does not undo Belly’s choice or resolve the romantic triangle.

Why does Belly choose Jeremiah?
The finale follows a season shaped by grief after Susannah’s death and the family’s fear of losing the Cousins house. Belly’s relationships with both brothers have changed in that context. Han has described Jeremiah’s openness and his ability to meet Belly in grief as part of her attraction to him. That is the creator’s explanation of Belly’s feelings, not a verdict that Jeremiah is objectively the “right” brother.
The episode frames the choice as Belly’s decision, including its uncertainty and consequences. It does not present the choice as a permanent ranking of the brothers.

Does the Season 2 ending settle the whole story?
No. The episode settles the immediate question—Belly chooses Jeremiah—but does not declare how her story ends for good. TIME noted in 2023 that the show did not have to follow Jenny Han’s books exactly. The novels, including We’ll Always Have Summer, the final book in the trilogy, can offer adaptation context, but they are not proof of what the television series had settled in this Season 2 finale.
For the episode’s ending, the distinction is simple: Belly chooses Jeremiah now; the closing narration leaves what comes next open.
