It made an early showing on Prime Video charts in the United States and United Kingdom, but the available figures do not establish that it is currently one of the world’s most popular films.
What is The Tank about?
Directed by Dennis Gansel, the German-language film follows a Tiger tank crew sent on a dangerous mission on the Eastern Front in 1943. Amazon MGM Studios is listed as the studio. The cast includes David Schütter, Laurence Rupp and Leonard Kunz, alongside Sebastian Urzendowsky, Yoran Leicher, Tilman Strauss, André M. Hennicke and Arndt Schwering-Sohnrey. Prime Video’s title listing provides the synopsis and credits.
The story is told from the German crew’s perspective. That viewpoint makes the film a morally complicated war drama, rather than a straightforward account of Allied forces or a neutral history of the war. The premise alone does not establish the film’s historical accuracy.
Is The Tank one of the most popular films in the world?
There is evidence of a strong early chart showing, not a verified worldwide ranking. On January 5, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported that the film had reached No. 7 on the US Prime Video chart and was in the UK top five. Those are country-specific positions reported on one date; they do not show its current rank or establish a global viewership measure.

Ratings are not a substitute for worldwide viewing figures. On October 4, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 62% Tomatometer based on four reviews and an audience Popcornmeter based on 250-plus ratings. Prime Video showed 3.8 out of 5 from 314 global ratings when its listing was accessed that day. These are platform aggregates that can change, and neither tells us how many people worldwide watched the film.
What kind of war film should you expect?
Tom’s Guide’s January 5, 2026 assessment says the action is relatively sparing after the opening and that the film concentrates on the crew’s psychological state and the human cost of war. That is one publication’s interpretation, but it is a useful expectation-setter: this is not presented simply as continuous battlefield spectacle.

Reviews differ in emphasis. Rotten Tomatoes lists James Delingpole’s February 12, 2026 Spectator review, which calls the film “a very watchable, gripping and sometimes moving portrait of men at war” while also identifying structural and narrative shortcomings. Common Sense Media’s Jose Solís, writing January 27, 2026, describes its German point of view as morally complex and challenging. Tom’s Guide found later sections familiar and the ending divisive. These are reviewers’ judgments, not settled measures of quality.
