Elon Musk hinted at a possible flying-car connection while discussing a Tesla Roadster prototype on The Joe Rogan Experience—but he did not show a flying car or explain how one would work. In the October 31, 2025 interview, Musk said Tesla was getting close to demonstrating a prototype and withheld design details until an unveiling. That is a teaser, not confirmation of flight, aircraft certification, production, or availability.
What Musk said on Joe Rogan’s show
Tesla’s SEC-filed materials date Musk’s appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience to October 31, 2025 and include the interview transcript: Tesla SEC-filed materials. In the conversation, Rogan asked whether Tesla was still making the Roadster. Musk answered, “Eventually,” then said, “We’re getting close to demonstrating the prototype.”
When Rogan asked whether he meant a flying car, Musk referred to Peter Thiel’s observation that the future was supposed to have flying cars. He added, “I think if Peter wants a flying car, we should be able to buy one.” Asked about a wing or the design, Musk replied, “I can’t do the unveil before the unveil.” The exchange suggests a flying-car angle, but leaves the vehicle’s design and capabilities undisclosed. The interview transcript records the remarks; it does not document a flight or provide engineering specifications.
Did Tesla unveil or demonstrate a flying car?
The interview establishes that Musk said a prototype demonstration was approaching. It does not establish that the demonstration took place, that the car flew, or that Tesla had produced a road-and-air vehicle. Musk hoped the demonstration would happen before the end of 2025; that was a forecast made during the interview, not confirmation that it occurred.
#1 Best Overall
- Boy's model toy car: The body is made of alloy material, with exquisite paint craftsmanship and good durability.
- Realistic alloy model car: The 1:32 interior decoration is realistic, with six doors that can be opened. The steering wheel and seats have simulated designs.
- Toy car with lights and music: Opening the car door can light up the lights and simulate the sound of an engine starting. It's a toy car that boys like.
- Companion to Decoration and Cake Decorations: It plays a great decorative role on display cabinets at home and is a great decoration for boys' birthday cake parties.
- Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.
Tesla’s public Roadster page describes the vehicle as an all-electric sports car and does not document flight capability. The available evidence therefore supports calling this a flying-car tease—not an unveiled flying Tesla, a certified aircraft, or a vehicle buyers can order as an aircraft.
How this differs from an eVTOL aircraft
Axios framed electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) as the closest existing market category to what many people mean by flying cars: Axios’s November 5, 2025 coverage. That context is not evidence that Musk’s teased Roadster is an eVTOL. The distinction matters because the interview does not identify the vehicle’s lift or propulsion system, intended flight use, or regulatory status.

| Question | Teased Roadster | eVTOL category |
|---|---|---|
| What is established? | Musk said Tesla was getting close to demonstrating a prototype; the interview did not show one flying. | Axios uses eVTOL as a comparison category for flying cars; that framing does not identify the Roadster as one. |
| Purpose and design | Tesla publicly describes the Roadster as an all-electric sports car. The flying-related design, if any, was not disclosed. | The comparison concerns aircraft designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing; the interview does not connect the Roadster to that design. |
| Certification and availability | Not established by the interview or Tesla’s public Roadster description. | The cited Axios context does not establish any certification or availability for the teased Roadster. |
What Musk discussed about the Roadster in 2018
In a 2018 Rogan interview, Musk discussed an optional Roadster performance package using cold-gas thrusters powered by compressed air, with a high-pressure tank and electric pump. He also discussed practical problems flying cars could pose, including noise and airflow. The 2018 interview is evidence that he discussed those ideas, not that the system became a production feature or that a Roadster could fly.
