Spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 finale, “At Last.” Belly and Conrad end the series together—but the finale gives their reunion less room to breathe than its emotional destination needs. The result is a romantic conclusion that can feel rushed: the show gets Belly to Conrad, then offers only a brief glimpse of the relationship they have chosen.
Who does Belly choose in the finale?
Belly chooses Conrad. After her time in Paris, the Season 3 finale, “At Last,” brings the two back together there. TheWrap’s recap says Belly later returns to Cousins, and the closing stretch uses a Christmas montage to frame the couple’s future. The triangle is resolved, but the finale’s most important choice arrives with comparatively little time devoted to Belly and Conrad as a couple in the present.
Why does the ending feel rushed?
The issue is less the choice itself than how quickly the show moves from reunion to resolution. Belly and Conrad’s history carries years of longing, missed chances and grief; the finale asks a reunion and a declaration of love to deliver the payoff for all of it. The A.V. Club found the ending beautiful but somewhat unsatisfying, specifically arguing that the season should have spent more time with the pair together and that the final declaration feels rushed. That is a critical judgment, not a universal audience verdict, but it captures the gap between the scale of the romance and the screen time given to its final phase.
Flashbacks can remind viewers why the relationship matters, but they are not the same as watching the characters build a shared life after choosing one another. The finale supplies the destination. It gives less space to the journey that follows it.

How does the show’s ending differ from the book?
The TV series does not reproduce the trilogy’s wedding finale. Instead, the show resolves Belly and Conrad’s story with a reunion in Paris and a Christmas coda. TheWrap describes this as a departure from the ending book readers expected. That change shifts the form of the payoff: rather than ending on the book’s wedding, the adaptation closes on the couple’s choice and a glimpse of what comes next.
That difference supports the feeling that the series leaves romantic material on the table, but it does not mean the show omitted every strong scene from the novel. Without a scene-by-scene comparison, claims about specific missing moments go further than the available evidence. The more grounded criticism is about duration and closure: the series gives limited time to Belly and Conrad together after their reunion, while the book’s ending provides a more explicit final commitment.

Does Paris help the finale?
Paris gives Belly a meaningful interval away from Cousins and the Fisher brothers, and the TV Guide’s defense of the adaptation is that it expands her Paris period beyond the book’s brief treatment. That extra room can make the series feel more attentive to Belly’s independent life. It also makes the compressed romantic payoff more noticeable: the finale has spent time establishing her time away, but comparatively little showing what her choice of Conrad looks like once they reunite.
Both things can be true. The adaptation can broaden Belly’s experience and supporting characters while still shortchanging the final stretch of its central romance.

Responses differ. TheWrap praised the finale’s landing and its fidelity to the spirit of the books, while The A.V. Club found the ending somewhat unsatisfying and wanted more time with Belly and Conrad as a couple. The disagreement reflects the finale’s central trade-off: viewers who value the reunion and its romantic symbolism may find the ending satisfying; viewers who wanted the relationship itself to unfold onscreen may feel it stops just as it should begin.
