Vhagar is the strongest dragon in House of the Dragon by the clearest overall case: she is described as the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros during the Dance of the Dragons, as well as exceptionally ferocious. But size is not a guarantee of victory. Caraxes, about half her size, killed her in their fatal battle. This is a canon-informed editorial ranking—not an official HBO power scale or a prediction that settles every hypothetical fight.
How to judge a dragon’s strength
There is no official HBO chart assigning dragons strength scores. HBO’s House of the Dragon character guide serves as a franchise roster, not a measurement chart. A useful comparison therefore separates physical scale from other advantages:
- Size and age: suggest physical power, but do not decide every encounter.
- Combat experience and outcomes: a veteran’s record matters, and a documented battle can complicate a size-based ranking.
- Speed: can offer a tactical edge without being the same thing as overall strength.
The ranking below focuses on dragons relevant to House of the Dragon and the Dance of the Dragons. It does not fold in dragons from other periods as though they were contenders in the same active contest.
Which is the strongest dragon in House of the Dragon?
1. Vhagar: strongest overall case
Vhagar has the strongest claim to the top spot. The canon-reference account describes her, by the Dance, as the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros, with a history of a hundred battles and no living rival for size or ferocity. TIME likewise calls her the largest and arguably the most powerful living dragon in its 2022 guide to House of the Dragon’s dragons. The canon reference reports that she was 181 years old at death; that is an in-universe figure, not an official HBO measurement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those claims make Vhagar the most defensible number one when age, scale, ferocity, and reputation are considered together. They do not make her invulnerable: her final battle shows why a dragon’s size alone cannot settle a fight.
2. Vermithor: the clearest size-based runner-up
TIME describes Vermithor, known as the Bronze Fury, as about 100 years old and the second-largest living dragon after Vhagar. That gives him a strong claim to second place on size and age. It does not establish that he would defeat every other dragon in a head-to-head contest.

3. Caraxes: the strongest challenge to a size-only ranking
Caraxes is described as formidable, fearsome, and experienced, despite being about half Vhagar’s size. His decisive evidence is the outcome of their fatal encounter: he tore out Vhagar’s throat. The account of Caraxes in A Wiki of Ice and Fire cites Fire & Blood for the battle. That result makes Caraxes the clearest example of why a ranking based only on bulk misses combat ability and circumstance.
4. Meleys: a speed advantage
The Ringer describes Meleys as faster than both Vhagar and Caraxes in its House of the Dragon dragon guide. Speed makes her a serious comparison case, but it is not identical to overall strength. It supports a specific advantage, not a definitive claim that she outranks the larger or more battle-tested dragons in every fight.

Is Vhagar stronger than Vermithor?
Vhagar has the stronger overall case in the sources reviewed: she is described as the largest and arguably most powerful living dragon, while Vermithor is identified as the second-largest. That supports ranking Vhagar first and Vermithor second for overall scale and reputation. It does not provide a measured strength gap or prove the result of a hypothetical fight.
Could Caraxes beat Vhagar?
In the fatal encounter described in the canon-reference account, Caraxes did more than potentially beat Vhagar: he tore out her throat, and both dragons died. The account establishes a specific outcome, not a rule that Caraxes would win every possible matchup. It is best read as evidence that size does not guarantee survival, rather than as a universal prediction.

How official is this ranking?
HBO’s character guide lists dragons but does not assign strength scores or publish an ordered power ranking. The relative-size descriptions and battle details cited here come from a fan-maintained canon reference citing Fire & Blood, alongside editorial guides from TIME and The Ringer. The result is an evidence-informed editorial ranking, not an official HBO verdict. The series and book can differ in portrayal and chronology, so book-dependent details should be understood as claims about the book continuity.
