Stranger Things began in 2016 with a group of young actors playing friends drawn into a search for a missing boy. By its fifth and final season, the series had followed those performers—and their characters—through nearly a decade of production and story. Here’s how the central cast’s roles changed, what the final-season guide says about their characters, and some of the actors’ work beyond Hawkins.
A decade of change, on screen and off
The comparison starts with two dates: Stranger Things debuted in 2016, and Season 5 was its final season. Netflix reported on January 1, 2026, that the finale and every episode were streaming on Netflix; availability can vary by region and change over time. Netflix’s Season 5 guide identifies the final season’s setting as fall 1987, after the Rifts opened in Hawkins.
Some of the best-known performers were preteens or teenagers when the production began. TIME described six young actors as having grown up on the Atlanta set, and The New York Times reported in 2025 that the young stars were adults by the final season. That arc belongs to the younger cast, not to every performer: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and other adult cast members were already established actors when the series started. The ensemble’s “then and now” is therefore about more than physical change—it also means a shift in character relationships and careers outside the show.
The young friend group: from a search for Will to a final stand
Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven
Eleven enters the story as a mysterious girl who helps Mike, Dustin, and Lucas search for Will. Across the series, her bond with the boys becomes a chosen-family relationship. Netflix’s final-season guide describes her preparing to protect that family as the group faces its last conflict. The guide also lists selected work outside the series; it is not a complete filmography.

Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler
Mike begins as one of Will’s closest friends and becomes Eleven’s most important connection to the group. In Season 5, Netflix describes him returning to a leadership role. Wolfhard has spoken about the particular pressures of working as a child performer. In TIME’s 2025 feature, he said: “As a child actor, you’re trying to make things easy for people. You don’t know how to speak up for yourself. You don’t know how to ask for a break.”
Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson
Dustin’s curiosity and humor help anchor the original group, but his later story carries the weight of loss. Netflix’s guide describes him grieving Eddie Munson’s death after Season 4. Among Matarazzo’s selected credits beyond Stranger Things, the guide lists earlier acting work; its short list should not be read as a complete account of his career.
Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair
Lucas begins as a practical, sometimes skeptical member of Mike’s circle. His relationship with Max brings a different emotional stake to the story. After the Season 4 finale, Netflix’s Season 5 guide places him amid the fallout of Max’s condition.
Noah Schnapp as Will Byers
Will’s disappearance launches the series, and his return does not end his connection to the Upside Down. Netflix’s final-season guide brings him and the Byers family back to Hawkins for the last conflict. Reflecting on the unusual experience of growing up through the series, Schnapp told TIME in 2025: “No one else has had this life experience.”

Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair
Erica starts as Lucas’s younger sister, then becomes an active participant in the group’s efforts in Hawkins. Netflix’s cast guide includes her among the returning characters, illustrating how a supporting role grew into a more substantial place in the ensemble.
The older teens: friendships and alliances evolve
Joe Keery as Steve Harrington
Steve’s early place in the story is tied to Nancy and Jonathan; his later friendship with Dustin becomes one of the series’ defining pairings. Netflix’s guide follows him into the successive confrontations with the Upside Down and Vecna.
Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler
Nancy moves from Mike’s older sister investigating the disappearance of her friend Barb to a determined reporter and fighter. In the final-season guide, she continues to take part in the search for Vecna.

Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers
Joyce’s determination to find Will drives the first season. Her story grows from a mother confronting the impossible to an essential participant in the wider fight. Netflix’s guide follows her from the rescue efforts in Russia into the final conflict.

Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman
Murray first appears as an investigative journalist and conspiracy-minded ally. His knowledge and willingness to act make him a recurring participant in the group’s dangerous plans; Netflix lists him among the returning characters.
Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler
Karen is introduced as the Wheeler family’s mother, outside the children’s inner circle of investigations. Her place in Hawkins’ adult world gives the series another view of the families surrounding the central group. Netflix’s Season 5 cast list includes her among returning principal performers.
New faces in the final-season cast
Netflix’s final-season listing also includes Amybeth McNulty, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux, and Linda Hamilton. Their inclusion marks how the ensemble continues to widen even as the story returns to its original town and central conflict. For a cast-wide reference, Netflix’s guide supplies character descriptions and selected credits; the credits are highlights, not exhaustive biographies.

Netflix published a Season 4-era age comparison that gave performers’ ages when their introductory seasons premiered and their ages at the time of that article. Those figures are historical, not current ages in 2026.

| Performer | Age at introductory season’s premiere | Age when Netflix published its comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Finn Wolfhard | 13 | 19 |
| Noah Schnapp | 11 | 17 |
| Caleb McLaughlin | 14 | 20 |
| Gaten Matarazzo | 13 | 19 |
| Sadie Sink | 15 | 20 |
| Priah Ferguson | 11 | 15 |
These are the figures in Netflix’s Season 4-era comparison, not a roster of the actors’ ages today. The New York Times’ 2025 retrospective and TIME’s 2025 feature add reported reflections on the long production and its pressures, but neither makes every cast member’s experience interchangeable.
Why the “then and now” story works
The original cast’s transformation is unusually visible because the series connects a decade of real production with a story that follows its young characters from childhood toward adulthood. The strongest comparisons hold both timelines at once: the performers grew older, while their characters moved from a missing-child search to a final fight for Hawkins. Around them, the adult performers and later additions helped make the story an ensemble rather than a single child-star narrative.
Netflix’s final-season guide includes Season 1 and Season 5 diptych images for several returning actors, useful for visual comparisons when used with appropriate licensing. Its credits and character summaries are selected reference points, not full career histories.
