Elizabeth Hurley wore Gianni Versace’s black safety-pin gown to the July 1994 London premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral, where she accompanied Hugh Grant. The dress was part of Versace’s Spring–Summer 1994 collection; its dramatic cutaways and oversized gold pins helped turn an informal loan into one of the decade’s most remembered red-carpet appearances.
Why did Liz Hurley wear the safety-pin dress?
Hurley needed a dress for the premiere of the film starring Grant, her then-partner. In a 2019 Harper’s Bazaar interview, she recalled being given a public-relations agency contact and receiving the dress in a white plastic bag. She also said she did her own hair and makeup at home.
That account makes the story less a tale of elaborate advance styling than of a striking gown and a relatively unceremonious handover. Hurley later recalled, “I was so unprepared for what happened that night.”
Who designed the gown, and what made it distinctive?
Gianni Versace designed the gown, which is associated with his Spring–Summer 1994 collection. A Vogue review of the collection, published October 11, 1993, identifies Hurley’s gold safety-pin dress with the collection and characterizes the wider show as Versace’s most punk outing, with references to his earlier bondage collection.

The National Gallery of Victoria’s collection label describes an evening gown first worn by Hurley to the premiere. Its cutaway sections at either side are held together by oversized gold safety pins, bringing together classicism and overt sensuality. The pins are not merely decoration: they visibly fasten the open sides of the dress.
What was it made of?
The NGV’s record for the accessioned gown lists viscose, acetate and metal. Harper’s Bazaar’s 2019 feature describes the original as black stretch silk. Because those material descriptions differ, the museum’s recorded materials are the more specific accession record; it is best not to describe the gown’s fabric as settled across sources.

What happened at the 1994 premiere?
Hurley wore the gown in July 1994 at the Leicester Square premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral, alongside Hugh Grant. British Vogue’s 2025 retrospective identifies the date and venue and says Versace was the only fashion house then willing to lend Hurley a look.
The arrival drew intense press attention. Vogue later described a media frenzy, while British Vogue assessed the appearance as effectively launching Hurley’s career. That is a retrospective judgment about the moment’s significance, not evidence that one dress alone produced her later success.

How did the dress affect Hurley’s career?
The attention became an important part of Hurley’s public profile. British Vogue connects the coverage to her becoming the face of Estée Lauder the following year, but the sequence should not be mistaken for proof that the dress by itself secured that work.
Hurley’s reaction to the uproar was captured in the October 1994 issue of Tatler: “Only in England could a saucy dress have such an astounding effect.” British Vogue quotes the line in its retrospective. Donatella Versace, in the Harper’s Bazaar feature, described the gown as being made “for a woman who is sure of herself and who isn’t afraid to break the rules.”

Why is the black Versace dress still remembered?

The dress’s reputation rests on both its visual impact and the story of how Hurley came to wear it—not on a claim that it single-handedly created her career.
