Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 8+, while noting peril, mild crude language and brief sexual jokes that families may want to weigh against a child’s sensitivities.
What is The Sleepover about?
Clancy (Sadie Stanley) and her younger brother Kevin (Maxwell Simkins) discover that their seemingly ordinary mother, Margot (Malin Åkerman), used to be a high-end thief and is in witness protection. When Margot and their father, Ron (Ken Marino), are kidnapped and forced into one last job, the siblings join their friends in a rescue mission.

Netflix describes the 2020 film as a family adventure-comedy; its title page also categorizes it as an action-comedy and mystery. Trish Sie directed it, and Netflix lists its US release date as August 21, 2020. Common Sense Media lists a runtime of 103 minutes. Check your regional Netflix catalog for current availability; a listing does not establish that the film is available in every country.
Is The Sleepover appropriate for kids?
Common Sense Media recommends the film for ages 8 and up. That is the outlet’s editorial guidance, not a universal age classification: the same guide labels the film NR, and the recommendation is not a guarantee that every child will find its scenes comfortable. For a family decision, focus especially on how your child responds to kidnapping, threats and comic action danger.

What scary or inappropriate content might children encounter?
Action peril and slapstick violence
Common Sense Media describes adults threatened with guns and knives and taken hostage. The guide also flags a fast self-driving car driven by children, children escaping from a boat into Boston Harbor, a child hit in the head, a toy sword being thrown, and children tying up a character. A dog is sedated, and one parent threatens to sabotage a car’s brakes. The film presents these incidents in a comic adventure, but the danger is still the main consideration for viewers sensitive to peril.
Sexual references and body humor
The guide mentions a brief look at a character’s bottom, a swimming joke about feeling a breast, and discussion of bed-wetting and prostates. Margot kisses a former fiancé, and the married parents kiss as well. These are brief references and moments, rather than a focus on sexual content.

Language and alcohol
Common Sense Media reports mild crude or body-related words, including “crap,” “sucks,” “boob,” “poop,” “perv,” “turds,” “pee,” “boogers,” “nerd” and “loser.” It also notes teenagers drinking in the background of a party scene.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What positive themes does the film offer?
The story emphasizes courage, teamwork, family affection and appreciating what each person can contribute. The siblings and their friends rely on different strengths as they try to help their parents. At the same time, the children break rules and put themselves in danger to do so, which may be worth discussing with younger viewers.

How to decide whether it suits your family
- Consider the peril first: the plot centers on kidnapping and a rescue, with weapons, threats and risky stunts.
- Think about humor and language: there are mild crude words, body references and a few sexualized jokes.
- Weigh the tone and themes: the action is played for comedy, and the film gives space to teamwork and family bonds.
- Use the age guidance as a starting point: Common Sense Media’s 8+ recommendation can inform the choice, but your child’s own sensitivities matter more than a single age threshold.
