The Naked Fig’s 30 March 2014 skinny-dip at Swanbourne Beach was promoted as both a positive-body-image fundraiser and an attempt to break the reported world record for the largest skinny dip. Organizers aimed for 800 swimmers, but a 2015 PerthNow follow-up reported that 672 took part, leaving the event short of the record.
Why The Naked Fig organized the swim
The event was organized by Perth cafe The Naked Fig, part of Fig Group, with support from the Butterfly Foundation, which PerthNow described at the time as a national charity for people affected by eating disorders and negative body image. Organizers presented the swim as more than a record attempt: it was intended to raise funds and awareness while encouraging a more accepting view of bodies.
Fig Group co-owner Lorna Mains said the aim was “promoting positive body image, and celebrating health, wellbeing and diversity.” Paralympic swimmer and event ambassador Jessica Smith spoke about pressure to conform to beauty ideals. Her view, as quoted in the 2014 report, was that repeated negative media messages contributed to people believing they were imperfect and should hate their appearance. Swanbourne naturist and Free Beaches Australia representative Tony Morgan described naturism as wholesome and said, “There’s nothing shameful in your body.” These were statements made in the context of the 2014 event, not findings about the effects of media or current positions of the organizations.
What was planned for the 30 March 2014 event
PerthNow’s 8 March 2014 preview said the swim would take place at Swanbourne’s nude beach. Organizers hoped to draw 800 people, surpassing the New Zealand record that the preview put at 745 participants.

The event was described as ticketed, secure and restricted to people over 18. The report said cameras and iPhones were banned, and the Nedlands Swanbourne Surf Life Saving Club would provide water safety and first aid. PerthNow listed a $35 ticket that included a sarong. A separate March 2014 preview in Have-a-Go News also gave the ticket price as $35 and mentioned off-site parking and a shuttle, but its description of what the entry included differs: it refers to a “funky Naked Skinny Dip song.” The inclusion detail is therefore not consistent across the two previews. PerthNow said all funds raised would go to charity; the available coverage does not state how much was raised.
Did Perth break the skinny-dipping record?
No. A PerthNow retrospective published in 2015 reported that 672 people ran into the water at North Swanbourne, 128 below the organizers’ target of 800. That report said the event fell 80 people short of the previous record. Its arithmetic uses a baseline of 752, however, which does not match either record figure cited in the two PerthNow articles.

The participant totals and record claims here are those reported by PerthNow; the coverage cited does not establish formal Guinness adjudication.

The 2015 PerthNow follow-up reported that a later swim at Fremantle’s South Beach drew 790 participants and broke the previous record. It was a separate event at a different beach, not a continuation of the Swanbourne gathering.
