Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq performed “I Lied To You” at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, joined by Misty Copeland, musicians and members of the Sinners cast. The Oscar-nominated song’s staging echoed the film’s dance sequence and highlighted how music helps tell its story.
Who performed “I Lied To You” at the Oscars?
Caton and Saadiq led the performance. The Academy’s announced lineup also included Misty Copeland, Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey and Alice Smith. The number took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood during the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026. The Academy’s performance announcement described the segment as an exploration of music’s role in Sinners’ storytelling and an homage to the film’s visual style.
How did the Oscar staging connect to the film?
The live number was a near-recreation of the film’s dance sequence, according to The Associated Press. Choreographer Mandy Moore said the Sinners team worked directly with the film’s choreographers and filmmakers, led by head choreographer Aakomon “AJ” Jones. Moore explained the approach in an AP interview: “And the throughline for both performances is that they start with storytelling, first,” she said. “Its story involved with dance. It’s not simply dance steps.” The AP’s account of the Oscars performances puts that idea at the center: dance served the story rather than appearing as steps detached from the film.
Was “I Lied To You” an Oscar winner?
No. “I Lied To You,” from Sinners, was nominated for Original Song. The Academy credits its music and lyrics to Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson. The award went to “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters, as recorded on the Academy’s 2026 ceremony page. The nomination and songwriting credits appear in the Academy’s nominations announcement.
