The viral “Croissantosaurus” is not a pastry you can order. Reporting identifies the dinosaur-shaped croissant as a generative-AI image associated with Ethos Cafe, a fictional Austin restaurant account—not evidence of a real bakery or menu item.
Is the dinosaur croissant real?
No real Croissantosaurus pastry is established by the reporting. Gizmodo traced the image circulating on Reddit and X to Ethos Cafe’s Instagram account and identified it as AI-generated. The account presented it as a menu item in a caption inviting followers to “savor our new Dino Croissants” with cappuccino; that promotional wording came from the account, not a verified restaurant or named speaker.
Gizmodo’s March 1, 2024 report described the image’s circulation and its association with the account. Eater Austin’s October 17, 2024 follow-up also described Ethos’s food imagery and other content as computer-generated.
Is Ethos Cafe a real Austin restaurant?
No. Eater Austin reported that it found no address, construction permits, or Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission license under the name Ethos Cafe. It also reported that the account’s reservation link redirected to an eel-slapping video. Ethos was a fictional restaurant account, not a place readers could visit or book.

How did the image become viral?
Eater dated the start of Ethos’s Instagram account to March 22, 2023, and said the dinosaur-croissant image drove a burst of attention in February 2024. Gizmodo reported that a joking X post about the image had passed 3.3 million views by the time its story appeared on March 1, 2024. That is a dated view-count snapshot, not a current total.
Who made it, and why?
The reporting connects the image to Ethos Cafe’s Instagram account, but Eater said the account’s operator was unknown in its October 2024 follow-up. The exact purpose of the project was also unclear. Eater raised satire as one possible interpretation; the available reporting does not establish that as the operator’s intent.
