The 1980 film makes Grady’s daughters identical twins, and Kubrick collaborator Leon Vitali later recalled that twin casting—and the visual idea it suggested—shaped their screen portrayal. The distinction matters: the novel gives the girls little presence, while the film turns them into one of its most memorable images.
Are the Grady sisters twins in Stephen King’s novel?
No. King’s 1977 novel refers to former Overlook caretaker Delbert Grady’s wife and two daughters, but the passages do not say the daughters are twins. A scholarly textual analysis discusses references from Stuart Ullman and Dick Hallorann, as well as Jack’s conversation with Grady, and concludes that none establishes twinhood. You can read Stephen King’s The Shining novel; the famous matching-girls encounter is a film image, not a scene identifying the daughters as twins in the book.
What did the 1980 film change?
Stanley Kubrick’s film presents the girls as identical twins and gives them a conspicuous encounter with Danny as he rides through the Overlook. Opera Colorado’s 2021–22 educational guide notes that the children receive only brief mention in the novel, while the film, adapted by Kubrick and Diane Johnson, makes them a prominent pair of apparitions. The change is not just a detail of family description: it gives the girls a recurring visual identity that the novel does not specify.
How did the twins enter the film?
The clearest production account comes from Leon Vitali, one of Kubrick’s close collaborators. A 2023 scholarly article quotes Vitali’s recollection, drawn from the documentary Filmworker: “In the script, they didn’t even say they were twins. I was just looking for someone who was good… But I was desperate. And then, on the last day, a woman brought those two girls, and they were twins.” Vitali said the pairing brought Diane Arbus’s famous photograph of identical twins to mind.

This makes casting and the visual idea it prompted the best-supported explanation for why the film’s girls are twins. It does not establish that Kubrick alone originated every element, or document a particular symbolic motive. Vitali’s account is a recollection quoted through the scholarly article, rather than a direct interview in that article.
Was the change part of a wider adaptation approach?
Yes, in the broad sense that the film makes substantial choices beyond the novel’s wording. Opera Colorado’s guide also notes that the film replaces King’s moving topiary animals with a hedge maze and changes Jack and Wendy’s characterization. Those examples place the sisters’ expanded screen role within a larger adaptation, but they do not explain the specific reason the girls became twins.

Jan Harlan, the film’s executive producer and Kubrick’s brother-in-law, told the BFI that King allowed Kubrick to adapt the story “to his heart’s content.” Harlan also described Kubrick’s interest in ambiguity. That is useful context for the film’s freedom to diverge from the book, not evidence that Harlan identified a particular motive for the twins.

The matching girls can be read as an unsettling image of repetition, doubling, or the hotel’s hold on Danny, but those are interpretations, not documented explanations from Vitali or Harlan. The available production recollection supports a more concrete account: the script did not specify twins, and the casting discovery brought a well-known twin image to Vitali’s mind. Keep that distinction between an interpretation of the finished film and an evidenced account of how its visual idea emerged.
