The film earned seven Academy Award nominations, and a December 2025 report said it was heading to Pluto TV’s free, ad-supported service in 2026, although later availability checks conflicted.
That conflict is the important part of the streaming news. The movie’s Oscar history is settled, but streaming rights are temporary: a U.S. availability check dated August 12, 2026 found no free listing at that moment. Pluto TV remains the reported free-streaming destination, not a guaranteed current listing.

What is Stephen King’s biggest Oscar-nominated movie?
Stephen King’s biggest Oscar-nominated movie is generally understood to be The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont’s 1994 adaptation of King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. “Biggest” is not an official Academy category or ranking; the defensible basis for the description is the film’s unusually broad awards recognition among major Stephen King adaptations.
The Academy’s official film record identifies The Shawshank Redemption as a seven-time Oscar nominee. Stephen King’s official work page confirms Darabont’s authorship, Castle Rock’s production involvement, and Columbia’s distribution of the movie.

| Film | Year | Oscar profile documented in the research | Why it fits the headline |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Shawshank Redemption | 1994 | Seven nominations, including Best Picture; no wins | The most broadly Oscar-recognized film in the headline’s Stephen King comparison |
Why was The Shawshank Redemption nominated for seven Oscars?
The Shawshank Redemption received seven Academy Award nominations for the strength of its ensemble acting, screenplay, visual storytelling, editing, sound, and music, as well as its Best Picture nomination. The Academy lists the nominated categories as follows:
| Category | Nominee or subject |
|---|---|
| Best Picture | The Shawshank Redemption |
| Best Actor | Morgan Freeman |
| Best Adapted Screenplay | Frank Darabont |
| Best Cinematography | The film’s cinematography |
| Best Film Editing | The film’s editing |
| Best Sound | The film’s sound work |
| Best Original Score | The film’s score |
The movie did not win an Academy Award. Its awards profile still matters because The Shawshank Redemption is not simply a horror adaptation or a niche genre title: it is a prestige prison drama that received recognition across major above-the-line and craft categories.
What is The Shawshank Redemption about?
The Shawshank Redemption follows Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, after Andy is wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to two life terms at Shawshank State Prison. Andy develops a long friendship with Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding, played by Morgan Freeman, while trying to preserve his identity and hope inside the prison system.
The film is adapted from King’s non-horror novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which appeared in the collection Different Seasons. The movie runs for approximately 142 to 143 minutes, depending on the listing. The difference reflects listing variation rather than a different film.

Is The Shawshank Redemption free on Pluto TV in 2026?
The Shawshank Redemption was reported to be moving to Pluto TV’s free, ad-supported lineup in 2026, but viewers should not treat that report as a permanent availability guarantee. A December 31, 2025 streaming-news report said the film was streaming free on Pluto TV and would also be available on Peacock beginning January 1, 2026.
A later U.S. availability check dated August 12, 2026 tells a more complicated story: the current U.S. JustWatch listing showed digital rental and purchase options plus DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD purchase options, but no free streaming option at the time of that check. Streaming rights can change by date, country, and platform, so search for the title inside Pluto TV before assuming that the movie is still available there.
| Viewing route | What the research supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pluto TV | Reported as a free, ad-supported destination in 2026 | Verify the title in the app; the August 12, 2026 U.S. check found no free listing |
| Peacock | Reported as available beginning January 1, 2026 | Confirm current availability because the report and later guide may not reflect the same date |
| Digital rental or purchase | Listed by the U.S. streaming guide | Price and retailer availability are not fixed |
| DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K UHD | Listed as physical purchase options | Edition, stock, format, and region can vary |
What is Pluto TV, and where can you watch it?
Pluto TV is a free, ad-supported streaming service with live channels and on-demand titles. Pluto TV’s official service description says the platform offers hundreds of live channels and thousands of on-demand titles, but a title’s presence in the catalog can still change.
Viewers can check Pluto TV through a web browser, mobile app, smart TV, Roku-class streaming device, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, or desktop access. The official Pluto TV device page lists the supported access categories. If the film is listed in the target region, viewers can watch The Shawshank Redemption free with ads on Pluto TV without treating the service as a subscription-only trial.

What should you do if the movie is no longer free?
If The Shawshank Redemption has left Pluto TV, the most practical alternatives are a digital rental or purchase, another currently licensed streaming service, or a physical disc. The U.S. JustWatch check recorded digital rental and purchase paths as well as DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD purchase paths, but the exact services and commercial terms require a fresh check.
For viewers who want a lasting copy rather than another changing streaming license, The Shawshank Redemption 4K UHD Blu-ray is the most relevant physical-media option. King’s official page lists DVD and earlier home-video availability, while the U.S. streaming guide lists DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD options. A physical copy can be a useful fallback for repeat viewing, but do not assume that a particular seller, edition, price, digital code, or stock status is current without checking the retailer at publication time.

The safest way to verify the 2026 streaming claim is to check the title directly in Pluto TV and then compare the result with a current U.S. streaming guide. Readers outside the United States should perform the same check in their own region because licensing can differ internationally.
- Search Pluto TV for the exact title rather than relying only on an old streaming-news headline.
- Check the date of any availability result; the December 2025 report and August 2026 U.S. guide did not show the same free-streaming outcome.
- Check Peacock separately if the film was reported as arriving there on January 1, 2026.
- Compare rental, purchase, and physical-media options if no free listing appears.
- Avoid reading “free streamer” as “free forever”; Pluto TV’s catalog and other licensing arrangements can change.
The headline’s core claim is therefore accurate only with context: The Shawshank Redemption is the Stephen King film with the seven-nomination Oscar profile behind the “biggest” description, and it was reported as a 2026 Pluto TV free-streaming title. The later U.S. availability check means the Pluto TV listing must be verified before viewing.
