The Sentence is Rudy Valdez’s documentary about his sister, Cindy Shank, and the family life she missed while incarcerated. Valdez filmed his nieces’ milestones and everyday moments so Shank could share in them from prison—and to show how her sentence reshaped the family left at home.
What is The Sentence about?
The documentary follows Shank’s daughters as they grow up without their mother at home, and the relatives working to sustain family ties while seeking her release. Rather than treating incarceration as an abstract policy debate, the film centers the everyday consequences of separation: birthdays, ordinary routines, and milestones Shank could not attend in person.
Valdez gathered footage over a decade. HBO Documentary Films says the film draws on hundreds of hours of material, including home movies, interviews, family moments, and recordings of Shank’s prison phone calls. The result connects private family memories with the broader debate over mandatory-minimum drug sentencing and its effects on children and relatives.
Who are Cindy Shank and Rudy Valdez?
Cindy Shank
Shank is the central subject of the film. A 2018 People en Español feature reports that she was convicted in 2008 and received a 15-year federal sentence on conspiracy charges connected to crimes committed by her deceased ex-boyfriend. The feature says she received clemency in late 2016, shortening her sentence by six years. Those details are a concise account reported by that article, not a substitute for the full court record.

Shank’s absence from her daughters’ lives is the personal center of the documentary. In the People en Español feature, she describes what the sentence meant to her: “Missing my daughters grow up, that’s what I was sentenced to.”
Rudy Valdez
Valdez, Shank’s brother, directed the film and recorded the family’s life for her. HBO’s announcement calls the underlying situation “the girlfriend problem,” its framing for cases in which a woman is sentenced for crimes linked to a male partner; it is not presented here as a formal legal classification.

Why does the film document family life?
The home footage serves two purposes: it lets Shank witness moments she missed, and it gives viewers a close view of what a prison sentence means for relatives outside prison. The film’s family-centered approach makes separation visible over time, while its interviews and recorded calls place those moments alongside questions about mandatory-minimum sentencing.
Odyssey Impact lists the runtime as 1 hour 27 minutes. That is the length shown on its page, rather than a confirmed duration for every version or release.
