In the comics, each presides over a realm. Dream—also called Morpheus—is lord of the Dreaming; Desire and Despair are twins; and Delirium was once Delight. Their roles are more than a roster of powers: family loyalties and conflicts matter, especially when Destruction abandons his duties.
Who are the seven Endless?
DC describes the Endless as seven siblings born at the beginning of time, each presiding over a realm. Netflix’s adaptation guide calls them anthropomorphic personifications of the forces they are named for. The two descriptions offer a useful starting point: the Endless are both a family and embodiments of fundamental aspects of existence, not simply a team of superheroes.
The guide’s character sketches are about the Netflix adaptation, so details about characterization below are attributed to that version where appropriate. For comic-continuity context, DC’s collection descriptions establish Dream’s identity and early story, as well as Destruction’s departure.
What does each Endless represent?
Destiny
Destiny is the eldest. In Netflix’s guide, he is a stoic figure carrying a book that records everything that has happened, is happening and will happen. His defining idea is the course of events—past, present and future—rather than a personal ambition to change them.

Death
Death is Dream’s sister and embodies death. Netflix’s Season 2 guide describes her, in relation to Dream, as wiser, nicer and more sensible. That is an adaptation’s characterization of their sibling dynamic, not a universal ranking of the Endless across every version.
Dream
Dream is also known as Morpheus and the Sandman. DC describes him as lord of the realm of dreams, the Dreaming. His story begins with a capture: in the opening premise of the comics, he is imprisoned for 70 years after being captured in place of Death, before escaping.

Destruction
Destruction embodies destruction, but his defining family choice is to give up his duties and leave his realm. DC’s description of The Sandman Book Three calls him the prodigal sibling and places a search for him at the center of the story. Netflix’s guide adds an adaptation-specific emphasis: he sees himself as an agent of change and longs to create rather than destroy.
Desire
Desire embodies what people want and is Despair’s twin. Netflix’s guide also describes Desire’s relationship with Dream as fraught. That tension makes the family structure consequential: the Endless are not detached labels but siblings whose interests and histories can pull against one another.

Despair
Despair is Desire’s twin and, in Netflix’s guide, Dream’s younger sister. She embodies the moment when hope is gone. Her connection to Desire is the clearest family pairing among the Endless, while her relationship to Dream places her within the wider sibling dynamic.
Delirium
Delirium is the youngest Endless in Netflix’s guide. She was once the innocent Delight. The guide portrays her realm and speech as difficult to follow, while suggesting that her siblings may miss the logic or wisdom in what she says. Her apparent confusion, then, does not necessarily mean she has nothing meaningful to communicate.

Why does the Endless family dynamic matter?
Each sibling has a distinct domain, but their stories turn on what happens when those roles meet personal relationships and choices. Dream’s fraught relationship with Desire, Death’s place as his sister, and the twins’ bond between Desire and Despair give the family an emotional structure. Destruction’s departure makes the conflict especially concrete: he leaves the realm and duties assigned to him, and his siblings’ search for him becomes a story point in DC’s Book Three description.
That departure also distinguishes Destruction from a simple personification of a force. In Netflix’s adaptation guide, he wants to create and understands himself as an agent of change. The comic collection description, meanwhile, frames him as the prodigal sibling. Together, those details point to a tension between a role’s name and the choices its bearer makes; the adaptation’s interpretation should not be mistaken for a complete account of comic continuity.

Where do the comic and Netflix descriptions differ?
The comics are the subject here. DC’s descriptions support the core comic framing: seven siblings, Dream as Morpheus and ruler of the Dreaming, his capture and imprisonment, and Destruction’s departure. Netflix’s guide is useful for a contemporary character overview, but its specific descriptions—including Death’s comparative traits, Desire’s fraught relationship with Dream, and Destruction’s creative outlook—belong to the adaptation.
For publication context, Netflix described the comics as 10 books published between 1989 and 1996. That is a description of the collection span, not an issue count. DC says The Sandman Book One collects issues #1–20, while The Sandman Book Three collects issues #38–56 and a story from Vertigo Preview #1. Those are details for those specific editions, not a complete reading-order recommendation.
A related graphic novel
DC describes The Sandman: Endless Nights as revealing the legend of the Endless and names all seven siblings. It is a natural companion for readers who want another book focused on the family.
