The 2025 film The Running Man opened in North American theaters on November 14, 2025. Box Office Mojo lists its domestic opening at $16,495,564, while an Associated Press report dated November 16, 2025 put the weekend at about $17 million. The film finished second that weekend, behind Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. The headline claim that this was “one of the biggest” debuts ever for a Stephen King adaptation comes from a Collider article carried on an IMDb syndicated page. The accessible reporting does not show the comparison behind that claim, so it cannot be verified as written. The sections below explain the figures and why the ranking remains open.
The opening figures, and what each one measures
Several numbers circulated in the first days after release. They describe the same weekend, but they come from different kinds of sources, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why the two opening numbers differ
The gap between $16.5 million and “about $17 million” reflects the difference between a rounded news estimate and a database entry. The Associated Press figure is reported as an approximation and is best cited as “about $17 million.” When precision matters, the Box Office Mojo listing of $16,495,564 is the exact figure to use, and it should be attributed to that database. Neither figure establishes an all-time ranking on its own.
Is it one of the biggest Stephen King adaptation debuts?
The “one of the biggest” wording is a headline attributed to Collider and carried on an IMDb syndicated page dated November 15, 2025. The displayed excerpt did not include the article’s opening figures or the list of films it compared against, and the full text was not readable from the pages reviewed. That leaves the superlative unsupported by the material available here.
#1 Best Overall
A ranking of Stephen King debuts depends on choices that any comparison must state openly:
- Market: domestic opening weekend or worldwide opening. These produce different leaders.
- Money basis: nominal dollars or inflation-adjusted totals. A film from the 1980s or 1990s and a 2025 release cannot be compared on raw figures without adjustment.
- Scope: all Stephen King screen adaptations, only theatrical features, or only films adapted from novels. Television productions and short films change the list.
The reporting reviewed establishes this film’s domestic opening and its second-place weekend. It does not establish the comparison table that a ranking requires. Readers who want to test the claim can check the Collider article itself and see whether it states its market, money basis and scope.

What the film is about
Paramount’s official description, accessed October 8, 2026, presents the premise as a deadly competition in which contestants must survive 30 days while professional assassins hunt them, with the action broadcast to the public. That page does not display a publication year, so the 30-day premise should be read as the current studio description rather than a dated statement.
The Associated Press identifies the 2025 film as the second adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, first published in 1982. The earlier adaptation was the 1987 film. Edgar Wright is credited as director and co-writer of the 2025 version. The AP report is the source for the adaptation history and the director credit.

Reading the novel alongside the film
Because the film is a second adaptation, the original novel is the natural reference point for anyone curious about what changed. A useful comparison is the broadcast element that Paramount’s description emphasizes: how the novel frames the televised hunt compared with the film’s treatment of the same idea. Stephen King’s official works page lists the 2025 film, which confirms the book-to-film link. This article did not check a specific current edition or its availability, so readers should choose a current edition through their usual bookseller or library.
