“Baja” shows Lucy Chen at her most committed to undercover work—not announcing that she wants to leave it. The episode gives her a personal reason to pursue justice for two murdered young women, while her four-week assignment with Nyla Harper exposes the emotional cost of the job. That makes a new career direction a fair question for a review, but not a conclusion the episode itself proves.
What happens in “Baja”?
“Baja” is season 8, episode 7 of The Rookie, released February 16, 2026. Lucy and Nyla go undercover in Baja to investigate the murders of two young women who had been living van life and were coerced into working as drug mules. Their operation lasts four weeks as they pursue both the people who forced the women into trafficking and the person who killed them. The episode also follows Nolan and Bailey as they navigate a long-distance relationship. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing credits Jon Huertas and Bill Roe as directors and Amanda Mercedes as screenwriter; the episode is rated TV-14 (V).
Why does the case affect Lucy so deeply?
Lucy’s response is tied to her own history. In a TV Insider interview published February 16, 2026, Melissa O’Neil, who plays Lucy, says “she’s always going to have a tender spot for women who remind her of what she went through.” The victims’ vulnerability therefore lands as more than another case for Lucy: it touches a past trauma that remains part of how she sees her work.
O’Neil also describes the assignment as feeling safer to Lucy because she is going with Nyla rather than going alone. That detail matters. Lucy is willing to spend weeks undercover, but the partnership gives the risk a measure of trust and support. Her goodbye to Tim, not long after the two moved in together, adds a personal cost without turning the story into evidence that she has decided to abandon police work.

Does “Baja” prove Lucy needs a new career direction?
No—not as a plot fact. The episode, as described in its coverage, shows Lucy leaning into an assignment she is equipped and motivated to do. She plans and carries out the operation with Nyla, and her determination to get justice is presented as a strength. Neither O’Neil’s comments nor the episode accounts say Lucy rejects undercover work, announces a career change, or identifies a different job she wants.
A more defensible reading is that “Baja” makes Lucy’s current direction compelling while leaving its sustainability open. Her empathy helps her understand the victims, but a personal connection can also make a case harder to put down. The four-week operation and the strain of leaving her new home life behind invite viewers to ask what this work costs her. They do not answer whether she should choose a different role.

That distinction is important because the episode’s strongest career-related tension belongs partly to Nyla. In Raquel Morales’s Fangirlish review, Nyla’s identity is described as deeply bound up with being a cop: she struggles with who she might be outside the job. The same review sees Lucy respecting Nyla’s need for space and praises the seriousness Lucy brings to the case. The episode can therefore explore what police work means to both women without establishing that Lucy needs to leave it.
Lucy and Nyla’s partnership gives the case its character focus
The undercover investigation is also a story about trust. Lucy’s willingness to respect Nyla’s boundaries complements their shared work, and the assignment gives their friendship room to develop under pressure. Lucy’s choice to go with a partner rather than alone is not just a tactical detail in O’Neil’s account; it helps explain how she approaches a demanding operation.

The pairing sharpens the episode’s contrast: Nyla’s sense of self is tied to the badge, while Lucy’s personal history makes this particular case unusually intimate. Their connection lets “Baja” examine how the job shapes people differently. A review can reasonably want a clearer account of Lucy’s longer-term ambitions, but that unresolved question should not be mistaken for an announced change of course.
How the other storylines affect the episode
“Baja” shares its attention across the ensemble. Nolan and Bailey are managing distance in their relationship, while Miles, Seth, and Nolan’s storyline brings guilt and fear of failure into the investigation. Morales’s review discusses how Miles’s choices put himself, Seth, and the case at risk. A February 17 recap from The TV Cave reports that Miles is suspended for two weeks and receives a six-month extension in the field training program after Nolan advocates for him. Those are fictional plot outcomes, not real-world employment benchmarks.

The competing threads can dilute the focus on Lucy and Nyla. The TV Cave calls the episode “just okay” and argues that the undercover case could have been more central; Morales, by contrast, emphasizes the character work and Lucy–Nyla friendship. That disagreement points to the episode’s main trade-off: it has substantial material for a character reading, but it divides its time among several ongoing stories.

Tim’s expanded responsibilities provide a parallel workplace shift, but they should not be treated as evidence about Lucy’s plans. In a TV Guide interview published February 16, 2026, Eric Winter discusses Tim adjusting from street action to watch commander duties and learning to lead with more empathy. That is Tim’s transition. It may frame the couple’s different work pressures, but the available episode coverage does not connect it to a decision by Lucy to change careers.
