The Rookie Season 6 Finale Review: “Escape Plan” Is Entertaining, but Lacks Shock Value

The Rookie’s Season 6 finale, “Escape Plan,” is energetic and watchable, but its action and Season 7 setup outpace its emotional payoff.

Spoilers for The Rookie Season 6 finale, “Escape Plan.” The episode delivers an energetic mix of action and next-season setup, but it does not build to the emotional shock its season-ending position suggests. Its strongest thread is the unresolved bond between Tim and Lucy; elsewhere, the plots move quickly enough that excitement often outruns depth.

What happens in “Escape Plan”

The finale brings several strands to a head. Monica’s conflict with Dr. London intensifies when she suspects Blair may no longer be under her command. Lucy gets a high-speed car chase, while Nolan works with the FBI in Argentina. These plot details are reported in the review; they are not independently corroborated here.

Those threads give the episode a broad, fast-moving scope. The action keeps it lively, while the Monica and Dr. London storyline supplies a clear point of escalation. But the episode has several demands to meet at once, and the compressed movement between them limits how much space each story gets to develop.

Action is the finale’s clearest strength

The review’s most favorable assessment is of the episode as action television. Lucy’s chase and the stunt work provide momentum, and “Escape Plan” remains entertaining to watch. The set pieces give the finale energy even when its story turns do not carry the same weight.

#1 Best Overall

That distinction matters: a busy episode is not automatically a satisfying season finale. Here, action helps the hour move, but does not consistently deepen the characters or make the consequences feel as substantial as the events on screen.

The shorter season leaves storylines feeling compressed

The review attributes the season’s ten installments to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, and argues that the shorter run left less room for the ensemble’s arcs to unfold. That is the reviewer’s explanation and assessment, rather than an independently verified account of the production schedule. In the finale, the effect is a sense that several threads are being advanced or resolved briskly rather than allowed a fuller emotional landing.

“Escape Plan” does tie off some loose ends and point toward Season 7. The review sees that as useful setup, but not a substitute for a finale-sized payoff: the episode moves the larger story forward without delivering a particularly forceful cliffhanger.

Tim and Lucy provide the strongest emotional thread

Tim and Lucy are still apart when the episode ends. The review reads Tim’s decision to seek help as evidence of personal growth, and Lucy’s efforts to help him as a sign that her feelings remain. Their connection gives the episode its most affecting material because it is rooted in a relationship the finale leaves unresolved.

That unresolved status works better as groundwork for a possible future reconciliation than as a dramatic end-of-season revelation. Viewers get reason to believe the bond is still there, but not the emotional release of seeing the pair reunite or a sharp new turn in their relationship.

Verdict: a bridge to Season 7, not a major cliffhanger

“Escape Plan” is a watchable, action-forward ending that sets up further stories and closes some existing threads. Its main weakness is balance: the stunts and plot activity are more assured than the emotional development, and the finale does not land with the shock or intensity of the series’ more forceful season-ending cliffhangers. The review’s verdict is therefore mixed but clear: entertaining television, with Tim and Lucy carrying the strongest emotional through-line, rather than a deeply satisfying season finale.
