The Rolling Stones announced Hackney Diamonds on September 6, 2023, and released it on October 20, 2023. The 12-track album was their next collection of original material after 2005’s A Bigger Bang; the band had released the blues covers album Blue & Lonesome in 2016. The announcement arrived with lead single “Angry” and its video, featuring actor Sydney Sweeney. BMG announced the album and release date.
How the Stones announced Hackney Diamonds
The reveal took place on September 6, 2023, during a live-streamed conversation with Jimmy Fallon at London’s Hackney Empire. The band had built anticipation with a teaser campaign before appearing for Fallon’s interview in front of journalists and an online audience, as the Associated Press reported.
At the announcement, Mick Jagger described the album’s musical range as including “love songs, ballads, country-type” sounds, according to the AP. “Angry” was released as the lead single alongside a video starring Sydney Sweeney.
What does “Hackney Diamonds” mean?
The title refers to shattered glass in Hackney slang. Jagger explained it as “when you get your windscreen broken on Saturday night in Hackney and all the bits go on the street,” as quoted by the AP. That is the band’s explanation of the title, rather than a claim about a formal linguistic definition.
