Why did The Rock return to WWE?
In a February 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson described his motivation as a love of wrestling and discussed continuing his family’s legacy. That is the personal explanation he gave publicly.
There was also a significant business context: Johnson joined the board of WWE’s parent company, TKO, in January 2024. The timing is relevant, but it does not establish that corporate responsibilities were his reason for returning to the ring.
How did the Roman Reigns story unfold?
The 2024 build-up
When Johnson returned in early 2024, WWE connected him with Reigns and the “Head of the Table” identity. The company’s February 2024 SmackDown preview promoted uncertainty involving Johnson, Reigns, and Cody Rhodes as the WrestleMania main-event picture developed.

What happened at WrestleMania XL
The final Night 1 match paired Johnson and Reigns against Rhodes and Seth Rollins. On Night 2, Rhodes challenged Reigns for the championship. The teased Johnson–Reigns singles match did not take place at WrestleMania XL; instead, they were partners in the tag match while Rhodes pursued Reigns’s title.

Does acting explain The Rock’s WWE absences?
Johnson has a substantial film and television career, documented in WWE’s profile. But the available sources do not establish a current filming calendar or connect a named acting commitment to a specific WWE absence. It would be speculation to say a particular production explains when he does or does not appear.
WWE announced that Johnson would appear on SmackDown on February 21, 2025, in a dated corporate announcement. That confirms another appearance in WWE’s orbit after WrestleMania XL, not a recurring schedule.

Is The Rock vs. Roman Reigns happening next?
No future singles match between them is confirmed by the sources available as of October 8, 2026. Their 2024 alliance and tag match are established storyline history; they do not confirm future booking. WWE’s Roman Reigns profile and its August 31, 2026 Raw preview describe Reigns’s later title and Bloodline storylines, but do not announce a Rock–Reigns match.
For a playable revisit rather than a real-world update, Take-Two’s WWE 2K25 announcement describes a Bloodline Showcase featuring both men. The game is an interactive retelling, not evidence of what WWE will book next.
