After inducting his grandmother, Lia Maivia, into the WWE Hall of Fame in Philadelphia on April 5, 2024, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stopped to confront a fan as he headed backstage. Contemporary reports say Johnson warned him, “Watch your f***ing mouth.” What the fan said first remains unclear.
When and where did the exchange happen?
The encounter followed the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on Friday, April 5, 2024. Johnson had just honored his late grandmother, Lia Maivia, and was leaving the ceremony area for backstage when a fan shouted at him, according to Entertainment Tonight’s April 6 report.
WWE’s official Class of 2024 page lists Maivia among that year’s inductees and includes video of Johnson inducting her. The ceremony also honored Paul Heyman, Bull Nakano, Thunderbolt Patterson, Muhammad Ali, and The U.S. Express.
What did The Rock say?
Entertainment Tonight describes Johnson stopping, turning toward the fan, and asking, “What did you say?” It reports that he later said, “That’s what I thought,” followed by, “Watch your f***ing mouth.” TMZ’s contemporaneous report also says the initial comment was unclear and reports the closing warning.

These accounts support that Johnson confronted the fan and delivered the warning; they do not establish exactly what prompted it. “Disrespectful” is a characterization of the incident, not a confirmed description of the fan’s words.
Did the fan say “You sold out”?
That wording appeared in a transcript reproduced by BroBible, which attributed it to a social-media user. In that version, the fan says “Cody’s coming for ya” and “You sold out.” Entertainment Tonight and TMZ both said the first remark was unclear, and neither independently confirmed that transcript. It should therefore be treated as an unverified account circulating online, not a definitive record of the exchange.

Was the confrontation part of a WWE storyline?
The moment occurred shortly before WrestleMania 40, when Johnson was playing a villainous character and was scheduled to team with Roman Reigns against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. That storyline is relevant context, but it does not prove the encounter was scripted—or establish that it was not. The available reports do not resolve that question.
