Released in the UK on June 16, 1972, it follows Ziggy’s ascent and ends with his destruction onstage. The album’s original sequence, the story behind it and the later anniversary and archival editions are distinct parts of its legacy.
What is the album about?
In Susan E. Booth’s account for the Library of Congress, resource depletion leaves humanity with five years, and extraterrestrial beings offer a possible salvation. Ziggy Stardust, a rock star associated with those “starmen,” serves as their messenger. He gathers young followers, but fame and self-importance overtake him; the story culminates in his destruction onstage during “Rock ’N’ Roll Suicide.” The Library of Congress essay describes the album’s concept, not a perfectly continuous plot in which every song advances a single, explicit storyline.
Booth connects the narrative to a critique of rock-star self-aggrandizement. That is her interpretation of the album rather than a universal reading. She also quotes Bowie explaining how Ziggy comes to believe his own prophetic role:
“Ziggy starts to believe in all this himself and thinks himself a prophet of the future starmen. He takes himself up to the incredible spiritual heights and is kept alive by his disciples. When the infinites arrive, they take bits of Ziggy to make themselves real, because in their original state they are anti-matter and cannot exist on our world. And they tear him to pieces onstage during the song ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide.’”

The quotation appears in Booth’s essay, which attributes it to Bowie speaking with William S. Burroughs in a 1974 Rolling Stone interview. Read the Library of Congress essay.

The anniversary releases and the later archival set serve different purposes: the 2022 LP and picture disc present the original album, while the 2024 Rock ’n’ Roll Star! collection gathers recordings and contextual material around its creation.
