Its Siege of Eregion storyline gives the season a sharper center, bringing battle spectacle, character drama, and the show’s Second Age themes into closer alignment. Critics praised it widely, and year-end lists recognized it—but that is a strong critical case, not a universal verdict.
Which episode is being called one of 2024’s best?
The episode is “Doomed to Die,” Season Two, Episode Seven. It premiered on September 26, 2024, and centers on the Siege of Eregion, with related scenes in Khazad-dûm. Season Two premiered August 29 and consists of eight episodes. Amazon describes the series as a story set in Middle-earth’s Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
That context matters: the episode is not a standalone documentary or a separate special, but a pivotal installment in an ensemble fantasy series. Its distinction comes in part from how tightly it gathers the season’s drama around Eregion.
Why the episode’s focus works
A clearer dramatic center
Polygon’s Leon Miller praised the episode as the season’s best, and possibly the series’ best, pointing to thematic clarity and character development. The Eregion siege supplies a sustained central conflict, while the Khazad-dûm scenes connect the immediate danger to the wider world of the season. Rather than giving every storyline equal weight in the same hour, the episode’s concentration lets its central stakes register.

That focus is especially effective in an eight-episode season built around an ensemble and a broad Second Age story. The episode’s narrower center does not mean every thread is resolved; it gives the hour a more unified shape.
Battle spectacle with character stakes
The action is another part of the critical case. Miller highlighted the battle sequences for finding distinctive moments within a franchise tradition already known for large-scale conflict. The episode’s appeal is not simply that it stages a siege, but that the combat and character scenes work together: the scale gives the conflict force, while the personal drama gives that scale meaning.
How strong was the critical response?
Polygon and IGN both named “Doomed to Die” the best episode of Season Two. IGN reviewer Samantha Nelson rated it 8/10, while making a useful distinction: she did not think it surpassed Season One’s “Udûn,” whose dramatic reversals she found stronger. That qualification helps explain why “one of the year’s best” is more defensible than calling it the year’s uncontested best.
Rotten Tomatoes’ episode score was reported at 100% from 12 critic reviews, with an average of 8.4/10. That is a small critic sample, not an audience rating or proof of universal agreement. Year-end recognition adds broader support for the claim: Total Film ranked it first on its best TV episodes of 2024 list; Mashable placed it 20th and IndieWire 27th, while Entertainment Weekly included it without a rank.

Taken together, though, they show that the episode’s reputation rests on more than one enthusiastic review: several outlets singled it out among the year’s television, even as individual critics made different comparisons.
