Season 2 did open below Season 1 on several comparable U.S. audience measures, but the available data does not support calling it a failure or saying that Amazon nearly canceled the series. The more accurate reading is that Season 2 remained a major streaming title while performing less strongly than its predecessor at launch.
Is The Rings of Power Season 3 happening?
Yes. Amazon officially announced Season 3 on February 13, 2025, describing it as being in development and pre-production. Prime Video and Amazon’s current Season 3 guide now give the release date as November 11, 2026.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon’s 2026 Upfront announcement independently repeated the date and said the story would move several years beyond Season 2, into the height of the War of the Elves. This is no longer a case of a series waiting for a renewal decision; production plans and a premiere date have been publicly confirmed.
What Season 3 will be about
The official premise says that five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have expanded their conquest, and the surviving free peoples of Middle-earth—including Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Wizards—will have to cooperate against him.
At the center of the conflict is Sauron’s effort to forge the One Ring and achieve domination over Middle-earth. The setup points to a broader war than the political and personal conflicts that shaped much of the first two seasons, although the official synopsis does not yet provide a complete episode-by-episode story outline.
Newly identified cast members
Amazon’s Season 3 announcement identifies Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn and Zubin Varla as Khamûl. Their inclusion signals that the next chapter will expand the show’s use of major Tolkien-era figures, but the official material does not establish every detail of their roles or how closely their stories will follow the books.

Did Season 2’s ratings decline put Season 3 at risk?
There was a real comparative decline from Season 1’s opening performance, but “ratings decline” is an imprecise description of the available streaming data. Amazon’s reported viewer totals and Nielsen’s minutes-viewed figures measure different things, and neither creates a perfectly comparable season-to-season ratings series.
| Measure | What it showed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nielsen, August 26–September 1, 2024 | 1.015 billion minutes viewed | Season 2 ranked No. 2 among all Nielsen-tracked streaming programs and was the most-watched original streaming show that week. |
| Amazon’s first-month figure | 55 million viewers | Amazon reported 55 million viewers for Season 2, compared with 40 million reported 11 days after launch. Amazon did not precisely define “viewer.” |
| Season 1 comparison | 1.3 billion Nielsen minutes in its opening-week comparison | The Season 2 total was lower, but episode availability, viewing windows, runtimes, and the inclusion of both seasons in the reported total complicate a direct comparison. |
| Nielsen, September 2024 | 4.3 billion minutes for the title | The Rings of Power was the third most-watched streaming title in the United States that month, showing that it remained a high-volume series. |
Nielsen’s opening-week figure is especially important because it prevents an overly simple “nobody watched Season 2” narrative. The season was still one of the largest streaming releases in the United States. At the same time, the lower opening total compared with Season 1 indicates that its launch momentum was weaker.
Why the numbers should not be treated as one ratings chart
Amazon’s viewer number and Nielsen’s minutes-viewed number answer different questions:
- Amazon’s viewer total is a platform-reported count, but Amazon did not disclose a sufficiently precise definition of what qualified as a viewer in the cited report.
- Nielsen’s figure measures total minutes viewed in the United States during a specified interval. It is affected by how many episodes were available, episode runtimes, repeat viewing, and the length of the measurement window.
- Monthly totals provide broader context but are not the same as a launch-week performance measure.
That means it is fair to say Season 2 underperformed Season 1 on several opening comparisons. It is not fair to combine all of these figures as though they were equivalent measurements or to claim that the show lost a specific percentage of its audience without a consistent methodology.

What happened to reports that Season 3 was still uncertain?
A January 3, 2026 report described Season 3 as still being evaluated and said Amazon had not made a definitive renewal announcement. That was a time-stamped account of an earlier period of uncertainty, not the current status.
Amazon’s February 2025 Season 3 announcement, followed by the current release-date guide and the 2026 Upfront confirmation, supersedes that report. The January article should not be used as evidence that Season 3 remains merely rumored or that cancellation is imminent.
Some earlier commentary also speculated about production costs, executive decisions, audience sentiment, or possible creative changes. Those are industry hypotheses unless Amazon or another named source confirms them. The public evidence establishes the renewal and date; it does not reveal every factor behind Amazon’s decision.
What Season 2’s performance probably means for the series
The safest conclusion is not that Amazon ignored Season 2’s weaker launch, nor that the decline automatically threatens the series. Rather, Season 3 is proceeding even though Season 2 did not match Season 1’s opening performance.
Rank #4
Amazon’s decision indicates that the show still has strategic value for Prime Video at the scale of a major franchise. The September 2024 Nielsen data supports that interpretation: the title accumulated 4.3 billion U.S. viewing minutes during the month and remained among the service’s most visible streaming properties.
However, the audience figures do not prove that Amazon will make any particular creative or budgetary adjustment. There is no confirmed public statement in the supplied material saying that the company has changed the production plan because of Season 2’s numbers.

For fans waiting for Season 3
The most directly related physical collectible is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power — Season Two: Amazon Original Series Soundtrack by Bear McCreary, which received a physical vinyl release in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. It belongs in a fan-collection category rather than in the evidence for Season 3’s renewal.
Viewers interested in the literary background can also explore The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, which Amazon connected with Tom Bombadil’s appearance in Season 2, or return to authorized editions of The Lord of the Rings. These books provide Tolkien context, but they should not be treated as direct episode guides: the television adaptation takes place in Tolkien’s Second Age and makes its own changes to chronology and characterization.

The Rings of Power Season 3 is not merely “reportedly renewed.” It is officially moving forward and is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. Season 2’s opening audience was weaker than Season 1’s on several U.S. comparisons, yet the series remained a substantial streaming hit by volume. The available evidence supports a measured conclusion: Amazon saw enough continuing value in the franchise to proceed, while the ratings data alone does not tell us what creative or production decisions may follow.
