Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power no longer asks viewers to guess whether Halbrand is Sauron: Galadriel learns the truth in Season 1’s finale, and the audience does too. The suspense shifts to watching Sauron adopt the guise of Annatar, the “Lord of Gifts,” and try to win Celebrimbor’s trust while the characters around him lack the viewer’s full knowledge.
What changes when the audience knows Sauron’s identity?
The reveal turns a mystery into dramatic irony. In Season 1, Halbrand’s identity is a question the viewer can investigate alongside Galadriel. After the finale, the question is no longer simply who he is; it is what he will do next, who will believe him, and what his deception will cost.
That shift changes how a scene can play. When Sauron offers help or appears candid, viewers can weigh his words against what they know, while other characters must judge him from what he presents. The tension comes from that imbalance—not from a claim that every character is unaware, or that every audience member remembers every clue.
Who is Annatar in Season 2?
In Season 2, Sauron takes on the name and appearance of Annatar, “the Lord of Gifts.” Amazon’s official season guide describes him presenting himself as an emissary of the gods and offering knowledge and assistance to Celebrimbor as he seeks to manipulate the Elven smith into making more Rings of Power.
#1 Best Overall
The offer is persuasive precisely because it can look useful. Amazon’s Sauron explainer frames Annatar’s approach as an effort to endear himself to the Elves, exploiting divisions and vulnerabilities in the societies and heroes established in Season 1. Galadriel knows Halbrand’s identity after the reveal; that does not mean everyone else knows who Annatar is or what his help serves.
How Season 1’s clues play differently on a rewatch
In a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, co-showrunner Patrick McKay described the intention behind Halbrand’s dialogue: “We tried to set it up where every single line would be true to a certain extent, no matter who he is.”
That is a description of the writing approach, not a promise that every line is a coded clue. The effect is subtler: dialogue can sound straightforward in the moment and gain another shade after the reveal. A gesture or remark that first seemed ordinary may seem ominous in hindsight, but the scene still works on its surface level.
Showrunner J.D. Payne also told Vanity Fair that the production kept Sauron’s identity closely guarded, even from Charlie Vickers early in filming. The interview’s account of that secrecy helps explain why the first season was built around uncertainty. Season 2 can spend less energy concealing the answer from viewers and more on the consequences of Sauron’s next performance.
