Spoilers for all of Season 1. Galadriel’s search for Sauron leads her to Halbrand, who is revealed to be Sauron in disguise. The Southlands become Mordor after an eruption set off by the orcs; Númenor’s expedition ends in disaster; and Celebrimbor forges the three Elven rings. Meanwhile, the Stranger and Nori set out east, with his identity still unresolved.
Galadriel discovers who Halbrand really is
Galadriel refuses to believe Sauron was defeated for good with Morgoth. Her search takes her across the sea, where she survives a shipwreck alongside Halbrand, a man who presents himself as a displaced king of the Southlands.
Galadriel and Halbrand persuade Númenor’s queen-regent, Míriel, to send an expedition to the Southlands. Halbrand later helps steer Celebrimbor toward the idea of crafting powerful rings. But Galadriel grows suspicious of him. She confronts him and learns the truth: Halbrand is Sauron, using a false identity—not a separate lost king.
The Southlands are transformed into Mordor
In the Southlands, the orcs serve Adar and prepare the region for their own purposes. They dig trenches to channel water toward a volcano. The resulting eruption blankets the land in ash and darkness.

The closing reveal names the transformed region: Mordor. The orcs’ plan triggers the eruption; Season 1 does not show Sauron personally setting it off.
Elrond, Durin IV, mithril, and the three Elven rings
Gil-galad sends Elrond to Khazad-dûm to seek help for the Elves, who fear their light and power are fading. Elrond’s friendship with Prince Durin IV makes the mission more than a diplomatic request. Durin’s father, King Durin, forbids further mithril mining. Durin IV defies him and is stripped of his rank.
Elrond eventually brings mithril to Lindon. Celebrimbor uses it in the forging of the three Elven rings:
- Narya
- Nenya
- Vilya
These are forged at the end of Season 1, before the later rings for Dwarves and Men described in Amazon’s Season 2 setup.

Númenor’s expedition fails, with lasting consequences
Galadriel and Halbrand win Númenor’s support for an expedition to the Southlands. The force includes sea captain Elendil and his son, Isildur. It arrives too late to stop the orcs’ plan and the eruption.
In the chaos, Míriel is blinded. Elendil believes Isildur has died, but that is his belief in the aftermath, not confirmation of Isildur’s fate. Míriel also faces political opposition over her alliance with Galadriel.

The Stranger and Nori head east
After a mysterious figure falls from the sky, Harfoots find him and Nori forms a bond with him. He travels with her, and by the season’s end they are heading east in search of adventure.
Amazon’s Season 1 recap identifies the Stranger as an Istar, or wizard, but says he is still seeking the secret of his name, powers, and purpose. His personal identity remains unknown at the end of the season.

What Season 2 picks up
Season 2 premiered on August 29, 2024, and has eight episodes, the same number as Season 1, according to Amazon’s Season 2 overview and trailer feature. The new season follows Sauron as he takes on the Annatar guise and tries to manipulate Celebrimbor into forging more rings.
Amazon’s trailer coverage also points to the Siege of Eregion and conflict spreading across Eregion, Khazad-dûm, Lindon, and Númenor. Tom Bombadil and Barrow-wights make their live-action debuts. These are Season 2 developments, not events that have already happened in Season 1.
Amazon says viewers do not need to have watched the films or read the books to follow the series; familiarity may help with references, but it is optional. The show’s adaptation choices should be understood on their own terms.
