The Resurrection of the Christ is a planned two-part dramatized feature directed by Mel Gibson as a follow-up to his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ. The announced theatrical dates are May 6, 2027 for Part One and May 25, 2028 for Part Two. It is a narrative film, not a documentary, so this guide separates what has been announced about the production from what the Gospel texts actually say about the events it depicts.

Release dates

Lionsgate and EPIC’s production announcement of May 21, 2026 sets the two theatrical dates below. As of early October 2026, these are the announced dates; they are not guaranteed and could change before release.

Installment Announced theatrical date Status as of October 2026
Part One May 6, 2027 Announced
Part Two May 25, 2028 Announced

Is it a sequel to The Passion of the Christ?

Yes, in the sense that it is announced as a two-part follow-up to the 2004 film. The announced subject is the resurrection of Jesus after the events of The Passion of the Christ. Because the announcement is a marketing and distribution notice, it does not describe the plot scene by scene, and it does not state the runtime, rating, or tone of either part.

Cast and roles

The cast announced for the film is listed below. The role assignments come from LEONINE Studios, the German distributor, which identifies the characters. Rupert Everett is named in the cast, but his role is not stated in the announcement.

  • Rome
  • Bari
  • Ginosa
  • Craco
  • Brindisi and Torre Guaceto

In the May 21, 2026 announcement, Gibson, who is credited as director and producer, described the project this way: “This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist. This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.” Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in the same announcement: “Mel is a true visionary with an artist’s eye for scale and a storyteller’s instinct for emotional truth.” Both statements are promotional and describe intent, not the film’s reception or historical accuracy.

Distribution

  • North America and the UK: Lionsgate, as announced in the May 21, 2026 notice.
  • Germany: LEONINE Studios announced the German release.
  • Other territories: Several additional international distribution partners were announced. Check the official announcement for the full list, since no territory-by-territory schedule has been published in the notices available as of October 2026.

No home-media release, streaming availability, or title-specific merchandise has been announced.

What the film depicts, and what the Gospels say

The Gospel accounts are the primary texts for the resurrection story. No scene-by-scene adaptation has been published, so readers should not assume that any particular passage will appear on screen in the form written. The four Gospels agree on the core event, the empty tomb and the risen Jesus, but they differ in who comes to the tomb, what they see, and where the appearances take place. The notes below use the NRSVUE text as a reference point; compare them with the translation you use.

Matthew 28: the women, the angel, and Galilee

Matthew 28 opens with Mary Magdalene and the other Mary going to the tomb. An angel announces that Jesus has risen, and the women leave to tell the disciples. On the way, Jesus meets them. The chapter ends with the disciples meeting Jesus in Galilee and receiving the commission to make disciples of all nations, so the location of the later appearances is Galilee rather than Jerusalem.

Luke 24: the empty tomb, the Emmaus road, and the ascension

Luke 24 names Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women who report finding the tomb empty. Two men in dazzling clothing announce the resurrection. The chapter then follows two disciples on the road to Emmaus, who recognize Jesus only at a meal, and it describes Jesus appearing to the gathered disciples. The chapter closes with the ascension. Luke is the only one of the four Gospels that includes the Emmaus narrative, so it is the most useful text for readers who want to know where that story comes from.

John 20 and Mark 16: the comparison texts

John 20 is the other major resurrection account to read alongside Matthew and Luke. It centers on Mary Magdalene at the tomb and on the disciple Thomas, and it does not include the Emmaus story. Mark 16 has a textual complication. Bible Gateway’s NRSVUE text notes that the earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not include verses 9–20 of the chapter. Readers comparing the film with Mark should keep this in mind: the longer ending of Mark is a textual question, and it is separate from any question about how the film adapts the story.

Predecessor figures and audience context

The following figures refer to The Passion of the Christ, not to the upcoming film. They are reported by distributors and should not be read as measures of current demand for the sequel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Budget and gross: The 2004 film had a $30 million production budget, a global theatrical gross of more than $610 million, and $370 million in North American theaters. These figures are attributed to Lionsgate and EPIC in 2026.
  • Netflix chart presence: LEONINE Studios reported that the 2004 film appeared in the Netflix Top 10 in 46 countries during the Easter periods of 2025 and 2026, and reached number one in 10 countries. This is distributor-reported chart context.
  • Theatrical reissue: Fathom Entertainment reported a 2026 reissue of The Passion of the Christ that included a preview of Part One. Confirm screening locations, dates, and ticket sellers directly with the venue or Fathom before attending.

What remains unconfirmed

  • Runtime, rating, and tone for either part.
  • The precise plot boundaries between Part One and Part Two.
  • Whether the film’s depiction of the resurrection follows any single Gospel account.
  • Historical accuracy. Promotional statements about the film’s scale or intent are not independent evidence of how it treats the sources.

Readers who want to test the film against the text can start with Matthew 28 and Luke 24, using the same translation for both.
