“I love you 3000” came from Robert Downey Jr.’s family, not from a calculation of the Marvel films’ runtime. Avengers: Endgame screenwriter Christopher Markus said Downey and his children used the phrase in real life, and Downey brought it to the set.
Where did “I love you 3000” come from?
Markus explained that the line was something Downey and his children actually said to each other. “He brought it from real life onto the set,” Markus told Fandango in an interview about Avengers: Endgame. Read the Fandango interview with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The interview does not identify which of Downey’s children first said it, or when and in what circumstances the phrase began. The specific family moment behind it remains unreported.
How did the wording change in the script?
Co-writer Stephen McFeely said the script originally repeated “Love you tons.” The final exchange became “Love you tons. Love you 3000.” That change paired a familiar expression of affection with the distinctive number Downey had brought from home.

How does the line work in the film?
Morgan Stark says “I love you 3,000” before her father, Tony, leaves. Later, in his recorded farewell, Tony echoes the phrase. The repetition gives the words a personal meaning between father and daughter that carries through the film’s story. TheWrap discusses the scene and the number’s significance.

The idea that 3,000 refers to the combined runtime of the MCU films circulated as an online fan theory. It is not the origin given by the writers: Markus attributed the phrase to Downey’s family, while McFeely described how the script’s wording changed. The runtime theory should not be presented as the explanation for the line.
