April Fools’ Day has a documented history, but no proven origin story. The earliest certain reference identified by the Library of Congress is a 1561 Flemish poem about a servant sent on fruitless errands. The familiar story that the holiday began when France moved New Year’s Day to January is not securely supported. And while a harmless, quickly understood joke can be fun, a prank that causes fear, humiliation, or real-world consequences crosses a different line.
How did April Fools’ Day get started?
No authoritative account explains how April 1 became a day for pranks. The Library of Congress distinguishes possible early echoes from a firm reference: the first certain reference it identifies is a 1561 poem by Flemish writer Eduard De Dene. That is the earliest surviving evidence cited here, not proof that the custom began in 1561 or that no earlier practice existed. Library of Congress, “April Fools: The Roots of an International Tradition”.
Earlier clues are ambiguous
Geoffrey Chaucer’s “Nun’s Priest’s Tale,” written around 1390, describes events occurring “Syn March bigan, thritty dayes and two.” Counting 32 days from March 1 points to April 1, but the interpretation depends on the word “bigan.” Many scholars have suggested it is a scribal error and that the intended date was May 2. Even if April 1 is the intended date, the passage does not show that people were already observing an April Fools’ custom.
A 1508 poem by French writer Eloy D’Amerval uses the phrase “poisson d’avril,” or “April fish.” Its context does not make clear whether the phrase refers to April 1 or to fools more generally, so it cannot establish the holiday’s origin either.

The first certain reference: a fool’s errand
De Dene’s 1561 Flemish poem depicts a nobleman sending a servant on pointless errands. The servant recognizes that he is being sent on “fool’s errands” as an April 1 joke. The Library of Congress identifies this as the first certain reference to April Fools’ Day. It is a clear example of the custom, not an explanation of where it came from.
Did a French calendar change create the holiday?
The popular story says France moved New Year’s Day from around April 1 to January 1, and that people who continued celebrating in spring were mocked as fools. The Library of Congress says this account is not securely documented. New Year observances in France varied by region, and French books show January 1 in use by 1507. The specific story of a week-long celebration followed by ridicule lacks contemporary evidence.

A related version blames the Gregorian calendar reform. The Library of Congress treats this kind of explanation as a migratory legend: a story retold in different places to account for a custom. It may sound plausible, but a plausible connection is not evidence that the custom descended from a calendar change.
Other festivals are sometimes proposed as predecessors, including the Roman Hilaria, Saturnalia, the Feast of Fools, Holi, and spring festivals. The Library of Congress finds no hard evidence connecting Hilaria to April Fools’ Day. These are parallels people have suggested, not established origins.

How did the custom spread?
The record becomes clearer in later centuries. In 1686, English antiquarian John Aubrey called April 1 “Fooles Holy Day.” A 1796 handbill and an 18th-century Boston diary entry document the custom in America; the Library of Congress says it was widespread there by the 19th century.
As newspapers, broadcasters, and companies became familiar sources of information, some April Fools’ pranks borrowed their credibility. The BBC’s 1957 spaghetti-harvest broadcast, a 1980 story about Big Ben’s clock, NPR’s 1992 Nixon impersonation, and Taco Bell’s fictional Liberty Bell announcement are examples of media or corporate hoaxes. Their reach helps show how a convincing source can make a false claim seem real; it does not show that audiences broadly approved of the jokes. Why do we pull pranks on April Fools’ Day?
The sources do not settle on a single reason the custom arose. A prank day does, however, make room for a recognizable kind of play: someone briefly treats the unexpected as true, then reveals the joke. That only works well when the target can quickly understand what happened and leave the interaction without lasting harm. This is a practical way to judge a prank, not a proven account of the holiday’s origin.
Rutgers professor of American studies and folklorist Angus Kress Gillespie advises that a joke “should also be low-key and inconsequential.” He cautions against false claims that someone has lost a job or is pregnant because they can cause anxiety. Towson archaeologist Kat Ahlrichs recalls that a childhood prank involving toothpaste in an Oreo did not feel funny to her at the time; she also describes a fake horse burial at an archaeological site that angered the researcher. These examples illustrate how a prank can land differently for its target than for the person telling it. Neither interview establishes that public opinion of the holiday has recently shifted. When does an April Fools’ prank stop being funny?
A useful test is the gap between reversible amusement and lasting consequence. Can the target recognize the joke quickly and move on, or does it create fear, humiliation, material loss, a safety risk, or a false belief that spreads beyond the people involved? The greater the consequence and the harder it is to undo, the less a prank resembles harmless play.
- Keep the stakes low. Avoid jokes about job loss, pregnancy, emergencies, or other situations that can trigger genuine distress.
- Consider the audience. A private joke among people who trust one another is different from a hoax presented to the public as credible news.
- Think about who bears the cost. If someone else must manage the damage, embarrassment, or disruption, the prankster’s amusement is not the only relevant measure.
- Make the reveal prompt. A joke that depends on someone continuing to believe a harmful claim is not made harmless merely by calling it a prank afterward.
These are practical applications of Gillespie’s low-stakes advice, not a claim that every audience has the same boundaries. Context and the target’s experience matter.
How can you check an extraordinary April Fools’ claim?
A convincing hoax can borrow the authority of a broadcaster, company, or institution. Towson’s Ahlrichs recommends checking more than one source: “No. 1, look for multiple sources. You should never just believe something from one person.” She also advises considering a source’s reputation and incentives and examining your own bias. If a striking announcement appears on April 1, verify it before sharing it as fact.
What the historical record can—and cannot—tell us
The evidence supports a modest conclusion: April Fools’ Day was established by the 16th century, and there are earlier passages or traditions people have tried to connect to it. It does not identify a definitive beginning, validate the French calendar-change story, or establish that the holiday has become unpopular. The modern question is less whether pranks are universally funny than whether a particular joke lets everyone involved share the amusement without imposing real harm.
