Pixar’s *Lava* draws on the real spectacle of ocean volcanoes and tropical islands: repeated eruptions can build broad volcanic mountains that eventually rise above the sea. Hawaiʻi’s Kīlauea offers a useful real-world example of that process, though Pixar describes the film’s inspiration broadly and does not identify a particular volcano or present the story as a scientific account.
What Pixar says inspired Lava
Pixar describes Lava as “a musical love story that takes place over millions of years,” inspired by “the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes.” The description establishes a broad inspiration, not a claim that the film depicts Kīlauea or any other named volcano. How an ocean volcano can become an island
The Hawaiian Islands are the exposed peaks of a much larger, mostly submerged volcanic mountain chain called the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain. Hotspot volcanism occurs when a localized source of heat melts rock beneath the moving oceanic plate, supplying magma that can erupt and build volcanic mountains. Given enough repeated eruptions, a volcano can grow upward from the seafloor until its peak emerges above the ocean. That process gives the island rising from the water in Lava a real geological analogue, even though the film’s character is not a scientific model. NOAA: How did the Hawaiian Islands form?
Why Kīlauea is a useful example
Kīlauea, on Hawaiʻi Island, is a basaltic shield volcano. Shield volcanoes are built by repeated eruptions of relatively fluid lava, which spreads out and contributes to a broad, gently sloping profile rather than a steep cone. Kīlauea’s landscape is still being constructed and resurfaced by lava flows.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that 90 percent of Kīlauea’s surface is covered by lava flows less than 1,000 years old; about 20 percent of those flows are younger than 200 years. The oldest lava flows found above sea level date to about 50,000–70,000 years ago. These figures describe Kīlauea, not every Hawaiian island or the precise timeline portrayed in the short. Volcanoes can erupt with lava flows or explosions
Kīlauea is often associated with flowing lava, but its eruptive history includes both effusive periods, dominated by lava flows, and explosive periods that eject tephra. The balance can shift with factors including magma supply, the state of the summit caldera, and whether water can reach magma or hot rock. When groundwater encounters hot volcanic material, it can flash to steam and drive an explosion. The USGS notes that at Kīlauea, when the lava column drops below the water table, groundwater may meet magma or hot rocks and cause violent steam explosions. How lava can change a coastline
Kīlauea’s Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption lasted 35 years, from 1983 to 2018. The USGS reports that it produced 4.4 km³ of lava, covered about 144 km², and added 177 hectares of land to Kīlauea’s southeastern shore. Those measurements show how repeated lava output can alter a landscape and extend a coast. They are specific to that eruption, not a universal measure of island growth. USGS: Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption
