The Rani is a renegade Time Lord: a gifted, ethically reckless scientist and an old rival of the Doctor and the Master. Her story spans two classic television serials, a non-canonical anniversary special, Big Finish audio dramas and a 2025 television return that revealed Mrs Flood as one of two Ranis.
Who is the Rani in Doctor Who?
The Rani studied at the Time Lord Academy alongside the Doctor and the Master. The official Doctor Who account describes her as a brilliant but morally suspect neurochemist, expelled after an experiment on a mouse produced monsters that ate the Lord President’s cat. That is the published outline of her early history; it is best treated as the show’s character summary rather than expanded into a more detailed biography.
Unlike the Doctor, whose curiosity is usually directed toward helping others, the Rani pursues scientific knowledge and control with little regard for the lives caught in her experiments. Her television stories make her a distinct rival: she can work with the Master when their interests align, but she is not simply his partner or subordinate.
Which television episodes is the Rani in?
The Mark of the Rani (1985)
The Rani’s first television story aired in two episodes on 2 and 9 February 1985. The Sixth Doctor and Peri arrive in early nineteenth-century Killingworth during Luddite unrest. The Rani is extracting a sleep-promoting chemical from miners, while the Master pursues his own scheme. The Doctor intervenes and frustrates their plans. Kate O’Mara plays the Rani in this story.

The Master’s willingness to use the Rani’s work for his own ends captures their uneasy relationship. He tells her, “My dear Rani, quite unwittingly you’ve made my triumph utterly complete,” before introducing her to Peri. The line is spoken in the serial, not offered as a neutral description of the Rani’s motives. Doctor Who’s story page gives the synopsis, cast and broadcast dates.
Time and the Rani (1987)
The Rani returned in a four-part story broadcast from 7 to 28 September 1987. She brings the TARDIS down on Lakertya, where the Doctor regenerates. Taking advantage of his post-regeneration confusion, she imprisons him and impersonates Mel. Her plan is to combine the intellects of captured geniuses—including the Doctor’s—in a giant brain, turning the planet into a Time Manipulator that can influence evolution.

The Tetraps initially help her, but turn against her after she double-crosses them. Kate O’Mara again plays the Rani; Sylvester McCoy is the Seventh Doctor. The serial is a separate scheme from the one in The Mark of the Rani, rather than a continuation of the miners’ plot. See the official story page for its synopsis, cast and dates.
Dimensions in Time (1993)
Kate O’Mara also reprised the Rani in Dimensions in Time, a Children in Need anniversary special in which the Rani and her assistant Cyrian try to trap the Doctor’s incarnations in a time tunnel. The official Doctor Who feature explicitly labels this appearance non-canonical, so it belongs on a complete appearance list but should not be treated as a turning point in the main television continuity. The official Rani feature provides that classification and summary.

How did Big Finish continue the Rani’s story?
After Kate O’Mara’s death, Big Finish continued the character with a new incarnation, Siobhán Redmond, in keeping with O’Mara’s expressed wish that the role continue. The audio line is its own strand of the character’s history; its developments should not be folded into televised continuity without qualification.
The Rani Elite and Planet of the Rani
The Rani Elite brings Redmond’s Rani together with the Sixth Doctor and Peri. In the audio backstory summarized by the official Doctor Who feature, this incarnation continues illegal experiments on youthful brains, is imprisoned, constructs a time tunnel to Miasimia Goria and escapes in a survival pod left by the prior incarnation. The Doctor later presumes she died in the Time War.

Planet of the Rani, released in October 2015, features Colin Baker, Miranda Raison and Redmond. Big Finish’s synopsis begins with the Rani in prison after her attempt to create a race of beings she could control fails. The release page lists the cast and story details.
The War Doctor Rises: Fear of the Light (2026)
Big Finish’s 2026 audio story places Redmond’s Rani in the Time War alongside the War Doctor, played by Jonathon Carley. They form an uneasy alliance against the Daleks while pursuing a plan to rebuild a universe devastated by the war. The three-part release was announced on 11 February and released in May 2026; Big Finish lists digital audio and a limited three-disc collector’s CD edition. Its current availability may change. Producer David Richardson said the Rani’s return was “very much prompted by Kate.” Writer Rochana Patel described the story as “very much the missing piece of the Rani’s story… And, perhaps, the Doctor’s too…” Those are the creators’ descriptions of the audio project, not a statement that it completes every version of the character’s history.

Yes. In its 19 May 2025 feature, Doctor Who confirmed that Mrs Flood is “the Rani – or a Rani, to be precise!” The reveal comes with a bi-generation at the climax of The Interstellar Song Contest: Anita Dobson and Archie Panjabi share the role, leaving two Rani incarnations in play. The official character page lists The Interstellar Song Contest, Wish World and The Reality War among the character’s stories, and says the two Ranis are set on bringing “absolute terror” to the Doctor. This television return is distinct from Big Finish’s Redmond incarnation. The shared name connects the character’s history, but the audio backstory does not establish the identity or continuity of the two television Ranis.
How to follow the Rani’s story
- For the original television character: Start with The Mark of the Rani (1985), then watch Time and the Rani (1987). Both feature Kate O’Mara, but each has a different plot and Doctor.
- For a complete screen appearance list: Add Dimensions in Time (1993), while keeping in mind that Doctor Who labels it non-canonical.
- For the audio continuation: Follow Big Finish’s Redmond-led stories, including The Rani Elite, Planet of the Rani and the 2026 War Doctor story. Treat this as a separate audio strand, not as an explanation of televised events.
- For the current television incarnation: The official character page identifies the 2025 stories featuring the Rani and lists the actors associated with the bi-generation. Streaming availability depends on territory and can change.
These routes answer different questions: the classic serials establish the original screen portrayal, the anniversary special is a non-canonical extra, and the audio dramas extend the character in a separate medium. The 2025 reveal adds a new television chapter rather than making all those strands interchangeable.
