The Promised Land is the international title of Bastarden, a 2023 Danish-language historical drama directed by Nikolaj Arcel. Set in 1755, it follows former captain Ludvig Kahlen’s attempt to cultivate the Jutland heath—and the conflict that follows when his project challenges a powerful local landowner. The film adapts Ida Jessen’s novel Kaptajnen og Ann Barbara, also rendered in English as The Captain and Ann Barbara.
What is The Promised Land about?
Kahlen sets out to make the harsh Jutland heath productive and establish a colony in the king’s name, hoping the achievement will earn him a royal title. But local landowner Frederik de Schinkel claims authority over the area. The stakes rise when maid Ann Barbara and her husband leave De Schinkel’s service and seek refuge with Kahlen. De Schinkel retaliates, pulling Kahlen and the outsiders around him into an unequal struggle.
The film’s central tension is not simply whether Kahlen can tame difficult land. His ambition brings him into conflict with entrenched class power, while his relationships with the people drawn into his undertaking challenge the idea that career success is enough. Arcel described the story as a man trying to learn how to be a father rather than remain only a career person.
Is The Promised Land based on a book?
Yes. The film adapts Ida Jessen’s Kaptajnen og Ann Barbara, which the International Film Festival Rotterdam lists in English as The Captain and Ann Barbara. The publication year is not consistent across the cited sources: IFFR gives 2011, while a 2023 interview with Arcel describes it as a 2020 novel. It is therefore safer to identify the book by title and author than to give an unqualified publication year. IFFR’s film catalogue and the Venice festival listing identify the adaptation and source novel.

Is the film a true story?
It is historically inspired, but the available information does not establish that every scene, relationship, or event follows the historical record. Arcel said both Kahlen and De Schinkel are based on real-life characters. That supports describing the film as rooted in historical people; it does not by itself verify the screenplay’s specific incidents or chronology. The director’s account appears in a 2023 interview with Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
What themes and tone shape the film?
Arcel has described the film’s characters as complex and its moral terrain as a “greyish area,” rather than a simple contest between a hero and a villain. He also discussed the period as a divided society, with farmers struggling on the heath while aristocrats lived in privilege. Those are the director’s perspectives on the film and its setting.

IFFR’s catalogue frames the wilderness-set effort to civilise the heath as Western-like, and reads the film through class and gender politics, with a tragic undertone. This is one festival-programme interpretation rather than a claim of critical consensus. The catalogue description is available from IFFR.

Release and awards
The film competed at Venice in 2023. A Nordisk Film & TV Fond report published on 31 August 2023 said its Danish theatrical opening was scheduled for 5 October that year and that TrustNordisk had pre-sold it to more than 50 countries. That was a contemporaneous trade report, not a current count of distribution territories. The interview and release report provides that context.
The UK distributor lists a Venice Golden Lion nomination and a Venice SIGNIS Award honorable mention. It also lists European Film Awards wins for European Actor, Cinematographer, and Costume Designer. These are the selected awards shown on Icon Film Distribution’s page, rather than a complete awards record.
